Tasting Notes

Porta da Ravessa Tinto Reserva joins our expanding Portuguese finds. With warm, welcoming aromas of intense blackberries, spice, plums and vanilla hints, this appealing, full-bodied red wine is worth discovering. It is complex with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum/damson, and nuances of dark chocolate, supple tannins and very good structure.

It is made from a blend of indigenous grape varieties, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet which together form 65% of the blend, and 35% Syrah.  Porta da Ravessa Tinto Reserva is an attractive, full-flavoured quality red wine; the 2020 vintage won a Gold Medal at Mundus Vini Wine Awards 2023.

How the wine is made

The grapes for this wine come from the wider Vinho Regiona (IGP) Alentejano region, the largest wine region in Portugal. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel vats, with a controlled temperature at 24ºC; this is followed by 6 months ageing in 300 and 700 litre French oak barrels.

About the Producer

Adega Redondo is one of the largest and most dynamic Co-operatives in Portugal. Although a larger producer than we normally include in our portfolio, we have been impressed with the quality of grapes and wines achieved by this Cooperativa of some 200 growers. This was one of the first Co-ops to be be established in 1956 and has played a pioneering role in the rebirth and development of the Alentejo wine region. They have a modern, well-equipped winery in the heart of the Redondo sub region, which is under the meticulous supervision of Winemaking Director Mariana Cavaca.

About the Region

The Alentejo is located in the South East of Portugal, South of the Tejo and covers around a third of Portugal’s land area. This warm, dry wine area is described by Jancis Robinson MW as “dynamic and good value” with over 90% of the wines sold under the IGP Alentejano or Vinho Regional Alentejano labels. An IGP status is less strict than DOC Alentejo label, in relation to the grapes that can be included in the wine.

The vines providing the grapes for this wine are planted in mostly granite soils with pockets of schist and clay-limestone. The climate is Mediterranean and this is the region famed for its Cork Oaks; naturally this wine has a cork closure!
