70% Fernao Pires, 20% Arinto, 10% Verdelho
IWC Bronze Medal 2023
Porta da Ravessa Branco Reserva has wonderfully inviting aromas of white peach with hints of tropical fruits, melon and spice. This wine has a beautiful balance and complexity of flavours, from peaches and greengage to tropical fruits and melons wrapped up with ripe citrus freshness and minerality. It has an elegant mouth-feel and a very long, harmonious finish.
It is made from a blend of indigenous grape varieties, Fernao Pires and Arinto which together form 90% of the blend, with 10% of Verdelho. At 12.5% abv Porta da Ravessa Branco Reserva is a dry, refreshing and full-flavoured quality white wine.
The grapes for this wine come from Redondo sub region in the heart of the Alentejo, the largest wine region in Portugal. The Fernão Pires and Arinto components are fermented in stainless steel vats, with a controlled temperature at 17ºC, whilst the Verdelho ferments in new French oak barrels at 17ºC. The components are blended together for added mouthfeel, palate weight and textural appeal.
Adega Redondo is one of the largest and most dynamic Co-operatives in Portugal. Although a larger producer than we normally include in our portfolio, we have been impressed with the quality of grapes and wines achieved by this Cooperativa of some 200 growers. This was one of the first Co-ops to be be established in 1956 and has played a pioneering role in the rebirth and development of the Alentejo wine region. They have a modern, well-equipped winery which is under the meticulous supervision of Winemaking Director Mariana Cavaca.
The Alentejo is located in the South East of Portugal, South of the Tejo and covers around a third of Portugal’s land area. The Redondo is a sub region in the heart of the Alentejo and is influenced by the Serra d’Ossa to the North and East which rises to 600 metres and protects the vines from the prevailing Atlantic winds. The Serra allows balanced ripening to occur and the production of very fresh and aromatic, citrussy whites, smooth young red wines and structured red wines with good ageing ability.
The soils in the Redondo are mainly granite, with some schist and clay-limestone. The climate is Mediterranean and this is the region famed for its Cork Oaks; naturally this wine has a cork closure!
