Tasting Notes

Mil Historias Bobal has a lightness and vibrancy about it, although full of flavours. It arrests the senses with intense aromas of cherry and plum fruit with citrus hints and a touch of black pepper.

** 2022 NEW VINTAGE OF THIS WINE WILL BE ARRIVING SOON**

The flavours are equally intense; there is cherry and plum fruit together with peppery and liquorice hints. This medium-bodied red has a full, savoury and  a long complex finish. Wines made from this widely planted grape, the Bobal, mainly found in the Levant area of Spain, often display power and vibrant fruit, but not all achieve the freshness and juiciness and a well rounded palate, that this wine does. As a result this is a refreshingly different Spanish red that should be discovered.

The recently released 2020 vintage is a very attractive red wine and the excellent cherry, raspberry fruit is beguiling. It is fresh, complex and structured. We were pleased to see that it was Highly Commended in The Wine Merchant Top 100 Competition in 2022.

The 2019 vintage was Highly Recommended in Decanter Magazine and appeared as Tim Atkin MW “Wine of the Week” with 93 Points and a stunning review; we also noted that Tim reckoned (in 2021) that it was stunning value at around £12!

Reviews

2019 Vintage – Tim Atkin MW – Wine of the Week – 2 July 2021 – 93 Points

“Here’s a paradox: Bobal is Spain’s second most planted red grape, but doesn’t have much of an image outside the country. Maybe that’s starting to change, thanks to wines like this one from the talented Roselia Molina in the high-altitude Manchuela appellation, where she makes a range of low-intervention reds and whites from organically farmed vineyards at 1,100 metres.

Mil Historias Bobal 2019 is wonderfully peppery, juicy and fresh with amazing vibrancy, plum, wild strawberry and black cherry fruit and a long, zingy finish. Stunning value at around £12.  93 Points;.”   Tim Atkin MW July 2021

2019 Vintage – Highly Recommended in Decanter Magazine:

“Vivid aromas of yuzu and prune. Bright zesty fruits …. with a peppery kick of watercress at the end. Fresh and juicy, with firm, smooth tannins. 91 Points” Decanter, April 2021

About Bodegas Altolandon

Mil Historias Bobal literally means a thousand stories and this range of wines from Bodegas Altolandon, one of the highest vineyards in Spain, are made from single varietals; all are organic and we stock their Bobal, Malbec and Garnacha.

This wine is produced by Manolo Garrote (who is an agronomist) and his wife Roselia Molina who is the winemaker. The vineyards and winery are situated in the hills well inland from Valencia near Cuenca. They began with 6 hectares in 1999 and now have 120 hectares of vineyard, and a purpose build winery in the centre of the vineyards. The altitude of the vineyards at 1100 metres, benefits the grapes with large diurnal variations, which encourage even ripening and also helps their natural acidity and freshness in this hot, continental climate area of Spain. Bodegas Altolandon have built a strong reputation and are probably the leading producer in DO Manchuela.

Organic production means a sustainable way of growing grape vines, with care and attention to the soils and environment for the longer term. They do not use any synthetic fertilizers and practice “green pruning” which restricts the yield to around 1.5 kilos per vine, which concentrates the aromas and flavours of the grapes. They are also using Biodynamic practices. The grapes are hand-harvested into 12 kilo cases and reach the winery in optimum condition. They are vinified as naturally as possible with native yeasts. The wines are then aged in French oak for 4 months, with some in clay amphora to retain purity, and build complexity. Finally they are bottled and have an eye-catching label which captures the natural and organic production.

Check out our competitive price: sells in a few independent wine merchants £13.99 – £16.45
Food match: A versatile red that will accompany grilled meats and chicken, spicy sausages, mediterranean vegetarian dishes and cheeses.  A great all year-round wine.
