Tasting Notes

Luis Cañas Crianza has rich blackcurrant and raspberry aromas with hints of creamy oak with enticing balsam hints. This leads you into its concentrated, rich fruit flavours and complex, savoury layers. It is such an elegant, yet appealing Rioja Crianza, with great structure, excellent balance and smooth round tannins. We are always impressed by the quality and price of this stylish Crianza which is more like a Reserva in elegance, complexity and depth of flavours.

How the wine is made

Hand-picked grapes from 30+ year old vines, are collected in small baskets and taken directly to the Bodega, where they are double hand-selected on sorting tables, before the vinification process. After primary fermentation, it is macerated for 8 days in stainless steel obtaining greater colour and complexity in the final wine. It is then placed in oak barrels where it undergoes a malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged in 70% French 30% American 225 litre oak barrels for 12 months, it is then bottled and remains in the Bodega for a further 12 months, at least. Quality new oak is another hallmark of Bodegas Luis Cañas and for this Crianza the maximum age of the barrels is 3 years old.

About the Bodega

Located in Villabuena in the Rioja Alavesa, the best area in Rioja, this family-run Bodega hand select the very best grapes for all their wines and use top quality oak barrels. They are renowned for their attention to detail in their own vineyards, and those they control, all the way through to the selection of the grapes and the making of their wines. The result is world class, elegant wines with fruit wrapped in silky, oak laced layers.

About the vintage

The 2020 vintage was classified as “Very good” in Rioja. The growing year provided challenges of mildew and Covid-19. Budding ocurred very early in the Spring, accompanied by heavy rains, and hail in some areas, leading to bud damage and mildew once the grapes had set. High summer temperatures brought rapid growth leading to a potentially early harvest. However, those who waited to pick in late September were rewarded by winds from the North with brought lower night time temperatures resulting in optimum phenolic ripeness and acidity. However, Bodegas Luis Cañas are able to take any weather that is thrown at them and produce consistent quality Riojas as you can see from the Reviews of previous vintages of this Crianza, below:

“Tempranillo dominated, with a supporting chorus of Garnacha, Graciano, Malvasía, Mazuelo and Viura, this very reliable, large volume Crianza has bright, perfumed dark berry fruit, notes of vanilla and mocha from a 70/30 mix of French and American oak, fine tannins and supporting acidity.
