Tasting Notes

Langa Pi 3.1415 is a stunning, limited edition, unusual, red with a great label and story (see below). In the glass this is a deep cherry colour with complex aromas of brambly fruit and hints of cocoa and cedary oak, which follow through to mature red fruits and blackberry flavours. It has a lovely balance of fruit, tannins and structure, providing a smooth, full-bodied, complex red with a velvety mouthfeel and excellent length. We were delighted see that it was awarded 93 Points in Guia Penin 2021. This is a unique red wine which is worth discovering.

The story behind the label

Langa Pi is made from the indigenous Concejón grape, also known as Moristel; it is grown in Aragon in Spain mainly in the DO areas of Somontano and Calatayud. It is difficult grape to grow but is very much at home in the stony soils of the Bodegas Langa’s vineyards in the foothills of Mount Moncayo near Zaragoza. It comes from a tiny 100 year-old plot of 3.1415 hectares. If we dig back into our maths memory, we may remember the symbol of Pi π which is is a mathematical constant – the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter – approximately equal to 3.14159.

This vineyard of 100 year-old vines, and hence low yields, is at 1000 metres, providing perfect growing conditions with a longer maturing period, translating into aromatic richness. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

About the Bodega

Bodegas Langa is one of the best and most advanced wineries in DO Calatayud, situated in the westernmost part of the province of Zaragoza in the foothills of Mont Moncayo. Founded in 1867, Langa stands out as one of the few family-owned and run wineries in Calatayud. Brothers Juan and Cesar Langa Gonzalez are at the helm of this fifth-generation modern winery. Bodegas Langa were founders of the Denominación de Origen Calatayud in 1989 and are a highly respected producer. They were the first commercial winery in this area to switch from bulk to quality wine production in 1954.

They own 70 hectares of spectacular vineyards, many are certified ecological with some well over 100 years, ranging from 600 – 1000 metres. No pesticides, herbicides or chemicals are used in the vineyards. Their present winery was built in 1985 and is a state of the art, modern facility where modern materials sit alongside the traditional methods of wine making. The results are intriguing, high quality wines from a lesser-known area of Spain.
