Iberian Discoveries Case takes you off the beaten track to enjoy some great new wines from Spain and Portugal. This case has two distinctive dry white wines, from a fresh Verdejo to the deliciously different Care Garnacha Blanca from Aragon. There are two contrasting reds from Spain, the lighter Merayo Mencia and the fuller, oak-aged, biodynamic, blend of Graciano and Cabernet Sauvignon. The indigenous grapes of Portugal offer further contrast with the easy-going Santhiago blend from the Lisboa region and the richer, yet elegant Quinta da Alorna made from Touriga Nacional.
This is a great example of the lovely indigenous Verdejo grape of Spain, with attractive tropical fruit aromas and hints of lime and herbs. This leads you into melon and stone fruit flavours with a touch of citrus; it has a good balance of fruit and acidity. If you enjoy Sauvignon Blanc, you will like this wine.
Paso a Paso meaning “step by step” defines the careful attention this wine receives at every stage of development. Made by Rafael Cañizares of Bodegas Volver. This wine is great with fish and shell fish, especially crab and prawns and it makes a nice aperitif.
This is a deliciously different white wine produced from the Garnacha Blanca grape by Bodegas Añadas in Aragon. Your attention is immediately drawn to its very intense nose with greengage and orange peel aromas, coupled with tropical fruit and attractive minerality. It has terrific, full flavours of tropical fruit with hints of orange zest, and nice minerality coupled with a lovely balance between freshness and structure. There are bags of mouth-filling flavours here and a smooth aftertaste.
Gold Medal in Grenache du Monde Competition 2022.
A very attractive, easy-going, smooth young red, from Portugal. Santhiago has aromas of brambly fruit combine with wild herbs, basil and spice and lead you into a fresh, light to medium-bodied red, which is extremely approachable with juicy, blackberry and blueberry fruit. It has some structure, smooth tannins and good length; above all it is unmistakably Portuguese.
A blend of indigenous Portuguese varietals with Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez and Trincadeira and a proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Quinta da Alorna arrests your senses with aromas of summer red fruits; raspberry, cherry combine with plum to provide deliciously rich and savoury aromas with hints of cinnamon spice and light cedary oak. These follow through to the layered flavours of plums and black fruits together with hints of chocolate and it’s all wrapped up in an elegant, well-balanced and long finish. With its fine, well-integrated tannins, this is a fresh and elegant red.
This wine is made by Quinta da Alorna, a family-run estate with 160 hectares of vineyards, 500 hectares of agriculture and 1950 hectares of forests, including cork oak. Tejo was formally called Ribatejo, the vineyards are located on the South bank of the Tagus River which strongly influences the grape-growing, providing a fresh profile to the wines. This wine is made from a single varietal from specific vineyard parcels and has spent 6 months in American oak barrels.
Made from the lovely Mencia grape with aromas of cherries and smooth, cherry fruit and spice flavours. It is a flavoursome, savoury red with good length. Pedro Merayo has 25 hectares of well established and immaculate vineyards, which includes 80 – 100 year old bush vine Mencia. This Mencia has some grapes from mature vines as well as from 10 year old trellaced vines.
This young red has been aged “sur lie” for six months before bottling and is a terrific example of the lovely medium bodied, refined wines this grape can produce. Similar to Cabernet Franc with a bit more substance; it has been described as the Pinot Noir of Spain and is definitely worth discovering.
An interesting blend, showing complexity and integrated tannins from its twelve months in American oak barrels. This is something different from Spain; a marriage of the difficult to grow indigenous Graciano grape, which is found in top Rioja wines, with the international Cabernet Sauvignon grape. It has striking aromas of deep, dark cherry and blackcurrant, laced with a touch of leather, almonds and vanilla oak. This is followed by intense, cherry and black-fruit flavours with almond hints. A stylish, medium-bodied yet rich red which is ready to drink now and will continue to develop. It has great structure and length; it will be at its best with full-flavoured foods.
Made by the outstanding, family-run,Dominio de Punctum organic and biodynamic vineyard estate in central Spain. This is definitely a food wine. A perfect match with Lamb and steak, it will also be excellent with all roasts and grills, full-flavoured chicken and vegetarian dishes and cheese.
