Tasting Notes

Finca Resalso is a great find from Ribera del Duero. It has expressive, rich blackberry and blackcurrant aromas with a hint of spice and subtle oak. These black fruit flavours combine with mellow tannins and a lovely savoury texture to provide a fine, well-balanced, textured red with the notable finesse of a wine from Ribera del Duero. It has structure and some complexity gained from its malolactic fermentation and ageing for 4 months in 3 year-old French Allier oak barrels.

About the producer

Bodegas Emilio Moro is a highly respected producer in the Ribera del Duero, an area which produces some very fine wines in Spain. It is owned by a family with a long history of wine-growing and is now its third generation. The origin of the winery dates back to 1891, and the family own 200 hectares of vineyards near Pesquera de Duero. Emilio Moro, was the grandfather of the current owners; he imparted to his son the love of winemaking, and he in turn passed it on to his children. Three generations later, José & Javier Moro continue to produce their superb quality wines from Tinto Fino, a clone of Tempranillo which is widely planted in this region.

The Bodega was rebuilt between 1997 – 2001 on a slope that enables the wine to be moved almost entirely by gravity, an age-old concept which not only reduces electricity consumption, but importantly makes for more vibrant, fresh wines with softer and rounder tannins.

Finca Resalso is the name of a historic vineyard and in contrast it was given to their most youthful wine, made from their younger vineyards which are currently between 10 and 30 years old. Like all their wines the grapes are hand-harvested and taken to the winery in small crates, to preserve the freshness of the grapes.

About Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero is high and hilly, with vineyards at 700 to 1000 metres. Here the winters are bitterly cold, with many frosts; it is not unusual for winter temperatures to hover around -5C. There are fewer than 140 days in a year that are entirely free from frost, and frosts are the main problem for wine producers. One year in three the effect of frosts halves the harvest. Summers are warm with temperatures of 25 – 32C, but due to the altitude the nights are cool. The combination of the altitude and soils in this part of Spain can produce some very good wines that contrast in style with Rioja which is only around 150km North East.

About the Vintage

The 2022 vintage was considered to be a good quality vintage in Ribera del Duero marked by the exceptionally long, hot summer, albeit the temperatures in the Ribera were fresher than much of Spain, because of their altitude. The dry growing season produced remarkable quality and the welcome September rains did not affect the grapes. The result is wines that will be slightly warm, with generous fruit and body. Ribera del Duero wines always seem to retain their structure even in hot years.

Excellent value for this wine; sells in some Independent merchants £14.95 – £18.49

Food match: A dinner party wine; perfect with grilled meats, especially Lamb. It will also accompany full-flavoured vegetarian dishes too.
