El Camerón Albariño is a new discovery Albariño at Bush Vines at a great price. It has the classic aromas of apricot, peach and there is a nice salinity combined with freshness and minerality on the nose. The flavours capture the purity of the Albariño grape in its depth of flavours – nectarines, white peach, apricots, citrus – yet offering a delightful freshness and texture.

We were thrilled to find an excellent Albariño that is good value. Albariño lovers will know that prices of the quality Albariños from Rias Baixas have risen steeply in the past couple of years. You must discover El Cameron Albariño which is appealing and complex with a beautiful balance. We discovered the 2022 vintage before this excellent review appeared in Decanter magazine Spain Supplement; the 2023 vintage is just as good.

About the Producer

A group of English winemakers have worked with a winery in the Val do Salnés a sought-after, premium, vineyard area in Rias Baixas, in Galicia.

The grapes are entirely from their own vineyards which are close to the Atlantic. This proximity infuses the wines with characteristic salinity and lively acidity, whilst the granite soils create incredible depth of flavour, making it the perfect match with seafood and inspiring the name, El Camarón is Spanish for shrimp, and appears on the distinctive label.

About the Vineyards

Most vineyards are on hillsides facing the Ria de Arosa, very close to the Atlantic Ocean, picking up characteristic saline freshness. Soils are predominantly granite; decomposed and crumbly at the surface, with rocky outcrops, providing excellent drainage. To ensure perfect sun exposure, vines are trained on traditional south-facing pergolas, and careful pruning harnesses the suns ripening power. In Rias Baixas the grapes are trained on pergolas to raise the grapes away from the ground, reducing fungal disease, in what is a wet and humid region.

How the wine is made

The vineyards are just 8 kilometres from the winery so the grapes arrive quickly and are quickly sorted and gently pressed. The must is cooled, and left to macerate on the skins for a few hours. Stainless steel tanks located below ground level then receive the must; temperature controlled fermentation using indigenous yeasts lasts 4 weeks. The wine is then kept on lees for 2 weeks, with regular stirring to enhance the texture and aromatics. The wine is stabilised, with some vintages undergoing partial malolactic fermentation. The wine has a light filtration before bottling.

The Albariño grape is difficult to grow, but produces exquisite wines that are aromatic, magnificently balanced and very flavourful. Research has shown that local yeasts are responsible for the aromatic character of the wine, and that yeasts are completely different from one vineyard to the next.

This is a full flavoured, stylish, abundantly fruity Albariño with sufficient citrus acidity to make it refreshing, but not predominate. Delicious with anything from the sea!

Food match: Perfect with all shellfish, especially crab and prawns, fish dishes, a variety of vegetarian dishes and cheeses.
