Tasting Notes

Earthsong Sauvignon Blanc comes from a Single Vineyard in the renowned Dillon’s Point area of Marlborough. New to our list this is the first release of this special Sauvignon Blanc which is definitely in the Sancerre style. Open a bottle and savour the intense aromas of blackcurrant leaf, grass and hints of passion fruit that lead you into crisp flavours of light gooseberry, grapefruit and tropical fruits. This is a superb Sauvignon which is refreshing, zesty and with wonderful mineral complexity and structure. It has terrific depth of flavour and a mouthfeel and the flavours go on and on!

There is a lovely flinty mineral quality about this wine which needs to be drunk at around 10 – 12 C to appreciate its range of flavours and textures.

It has received amazing reviews and is a bargain in our Spring Offers!
Reviews

“Powerfully expressed and instantly appealing, the wine shows passion fruit, kiwi fruit, and kaffir lime notes on the nose, followed by a wonderfully flavoursome palate offering terrific fruit purity and persistence. Finely textured and brilliantly structured by vibrant acidity, make it deliciously appealing”  The Real Review – Bob Campbell MW May 2023

“There’s no mistaking the distinctiveness in the bouquet with an equally distinctive palate loaded with flavours of fresh white stone fruits, grapefruit, pineapple and mango, basil and mineralised stony soil qualities. Crisp, just dry, balanced and well made. A classic wine style ready to drink now and through to Summer 2025+.”  93 Points – Cam Douglas, Master Sommelier, May 2023

“Full, flavoursome with passion fruit, cut grass, green capiscum and tomato leaf flavours. Weighty, complex wine with good mouthfeel and a lingering finish.”  93 Points – Bob Campbell MW. April 2023

About the Wine Maker

Led by Giles Cooke MW, who lives in Scotland and is on a mission to produce distinctive wines which demonstrate the characteristics of their sub-region. Working closely with growers, he has successfully produced old-vine garnachas for Thistledown wines in Australia, over the past 10 years. He then turned his attention to the renowned Marlborough sub region of Dillons Point in the lower Wairau area, near the sea.

Giles says “the demand for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is very high but there is very limited understanding of the sub-regions and their influence on flavour. Over 20 years ago one of New Zealands’s most revered winemakers was sourcing some of his best fruit from a plot in Dillons Point West.”

“Next to this small plot was an organic apple orchard which, upon further investigation, had the same free-draining alluvial soil profile.” Having approached the owner of the orchard, Giles managed – after much persuasion – to get him to grub up the orchard and plant it all to Sauvignon Blanc, and the final result is Earthsong.

About the Winery & Vineyards

Earthsong is now working with John Blackmore, the owner of said vineyard and a passionate advocate of regenerative farming. The vineyard also benefits considerably from its proximity to the sea which means that the cool easterly breeze that rises in the afternoon tempers the summer heat, resulting in a longer growing season and more pronounced diurnal temperature fluctuations.

The vineyard is not tilled, extensive cover crops are used and sheep are run in the vineyard over the winter to provide nutrients; the grapes are grown naturally and sustainably.

The combination of the soil, cool breezes and considered viticulture results in a “distinctive and incredibly intense style of Marlborough sauvignon with blackcurrant leaf and passionfruit exploding on the palate followed by the refreshing mineral/ saline finish (as one might expect from a vineyard planted on an old sea bed)”, according to Giles Cooke and his team.

About the Wine

With its eye-catching lablel, this is a stunning and special Sauvignon Blanc, with great purity of fruit, complexity and terrific length. A real treat; a terrific alternative to Sancerre.

Dillon’s Point is renowned for producing Sauvignon Blancs with tropical fruit notes and passion fruit to the fore. There are hints of blackcurrant and grapefruit too. The palate is rich, bright and zesty with a slight briny tang. This wine has real intensity of fruit, with a lovely crisp, mineral finish.

Check out our competitive price; sells in some Independent Wine Merchants £16.40 – £18.95
