Discover Portugal takes you on a tour of Portugal. For a small wine producing country, Portugal punches above its weight with wines of personality and unique characteristics. It has a wonderful variety of terroirs, climate and topography. Portuguese has a long tradition of wine-making and is blessed with indigenous grape varieties full of character which are often unpronounceable! It shares a 1214 kilometre border with Spain, but their wines are nicely different. This Case will enable you to Discover Portugal.
The epitome of Vinho Verde (young, very fresh white wine) from the Minho region of Portugal, North of Oporto up to the border with Spain. Abundantly fresh with aromas of citrus, nectarine fruit with hints of tropical fruit. It has superb full flavours of nectarines, citrus and light canteloupe melon nuances. It is made from indigenous grapes of Loureiro and Arinto and, at only 11% abv, it has a great level of intensity but retains a more-ish delicacy. It’s proximity to the Atlantic is one of the reasons for the production of these light, crisp white wines.
it is made by family-run Quintas do Homem. Antonio Miranda and his daughter run the 22 hectare estate and Ana Coutinho is the wine-maker and very much part of the family.
Their viticulture is certified as an “integrated production” a system defined by the International Organisation for Biological and integrated production. (IOBC). This is based on sustainability and the application of natural resources, using organic and biodynamic fertilisers and employing environmentally sound production methods. A great introduction to this Discover Portugal case.
This white has a beautiful balance and complexity of flavours, from peaches and greengage to tropical fruits and melons wrapped up with ripe citrus freshness and minerality. It has an elegant mouth-feel and a very long, harmonious finish.
It is made from a blend of indigenous grape varieties, Fernao Pires and Arinto which together form 90% of the blend, with 10% of Verdelho. At 12.5% abv Porta da Ravessa Branco Reserva is a dry, refreshing and full-flavoured quality white wine.
The grapes for this wine come from Redondo sub region in the heart of the Alentejo, the largest wine region in Portugal. The Fernão Pires and Arinto components are fermented in stainless steel vats, with a controlled temperature at 17ºC, whilst the Verdelho ferments in new French oak barrels at 17ºC. The components are blended together for added mouthfeel, palate weight and textural appeal.
This is a small production white from the Douro region of Portugal. It has vibrant aromas of greengage, cantaloup melon, apricot, grapefruit and hints of tangerine, which follow through to a concentrated, layered palate. There is a beautiful balance and complexity of flavours in this wine from stone fruits, especially white peach with some tropical hints and lovely balancing, fresh acidity. This is an elegant, dry textured white and the flavours go on and on!
It is made from a blend of indigenous grape varieties, Viosinho (providing high quality, full flavours from low yield vines, pronounced apricot flavours), Rabigato (a rare variety grown in the Douro with excellent acidity) and Codega de Larinho (flavours of melon, peach and pineapple).
The grapes for this wine come from three Douro areas at 450 – 650 metres above sea level on granite soils. Jean-Hughes Gros produces this wine using “battonage” where the fine lees and stirred once a week in the wine for a couple of months after fermentation is complete; this enhances the aromas and complexity. We recommend serving this at 12C (ie not too cold), so take it out of the fridge for 15 minutes or so before serving!
We now travel just South of the Douro to the Dao region of Portugal, one of the oldest regions in the country. It is a mountainous, rugged area which takes its name from the Dao River, and is known for fresh wines with powerful fruit and elegant structure. The vines providing the grapes for this wine are planted in very poor granite soils. The climate is relatively temperate with cold, rainy winters and dry, warm summers.
This appealing, medium-bodied red wine has aromas of juicy blackberry and cherry fruits and notes of vanilla and toast. Savoury, with full flavours of blackberries and cherries which predominate in this attractive, smooth, elegant wine with light tannins and very good length.
It is made from a blend of four indigenous grape varieties (25% of each) Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Alfrocheiro and Tinta Roriz. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel vats and the wine is aged for 6 months in oak barrels. Touriga Nacional provides concentrated black fruits, Jaen is the same grape as Spain’s Mencía bringing high quality, distinctively cherry fruit dimension, together with elegance, Alfrocheiro provides deep coloured fruitiness and Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo in Spain) a sappy freshness. It is produced by the well-regarded Cooperativa, Adega de Penalva do Castelo.
Moving Southwards we arrive in Tejo, adjacent to the DO Lisboa region. This red arrests your senses with aromas of summer red fruits; raspberry, cherry combine with plum to provide deliciously rich and savoury aromas with hints of cinnamon spice and light cedary oak. These follow through to the layered flavours of plums and black fruits together with hints of chocolate and it’s all wrapped up in an elegant, well-balanced and long finish. With its fine, well-integrated tannins, this is a fresh and elegant red.
This wine is made by Quinta da Alorna, a family-run estate with 160 hectares of vineyards, 500 hectares of agriculture and 1950 hectares of forests, including cork oak. Tejo was formally called Ribatejo, the vineyards are located on the South bank of the Tagus River which strongly influences the grape-growing, providing a fresh profile to the wines. This wine is made from a single varietal from specific vineyard parcels and has spent 6 months in American oak barrels.
This award-winning red comes from Adega Redondo (as does Porta Ravessa Branco above), it is one of the largest and most dynamic Co-operatives in Portugal. The Alentejo region is located in the South East of Portugal, South of the Tejo and covers around a third of Portugal’s land area. This warm, dry wine area is described by Jancis Robinson MW as “dynamic and good value” with over 90% of the wines sold under the IGP Alentejano or Vinho Regional Alentejano labels.
With warm, welcoming aromas of intense blackberries, spice, plums and vanilla hints, this appealing, full-bodied red wine is worth discovering. It is complex with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum/damson, and nuances of dark chocolate, supple tannins and very good structure. It was well-deserving of a Gold Medal at Munus Vini Wine Awards in 2023.
It is made from a blend of indigenous grape varieties, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet which together form 65% of the blend, and 35% Syrah. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel vats, with a controlled temperature at 24ºC; this is followed by 6 months ageing in 300 and 700 litre French oak barrels.
