Tasting Notes

Consensus 2019 comes from the Lisboa region of Portugal. This is an intriguing blend that combines Portugal’s finest red variety, Touriga Nacional with the elegant and fragrant Pinot Noir from an area which has seen significant development in the production of great value, interesting wines over the last 10 years.

It has a deep ruby colour with rich, vibrant aromas of blackberry, strawberry, fruit cake and vanilla hints. This follows through to appealing flavours of concentrated ripe cassis and summer fruit flavours, complemented by spice and vanilla notes. Consensus 2019 is a complex, medium to full-bodied, smooth red with rich, well integrated tannins, excellent structure and persistent length. Winner of two Gold Medals in 2023 – Vinum International Wine Competition and Berlin Wine Awards.

How the wine is made

It is made from a blend of 50% each of Pinot Noir and Touriga Nacional. The grapes are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel with twice a day “pumping over”, after fermentation, the cap is plunged for 30 days extracting gentle tannins along with a malolactic fermentation. It is then aged in French oak barrels (225 litres) for 18 months and aged for a minimum of 6 months in bottle before release.

About the Producer

DFJ Vinhos is one of Portugal’s most innovative and highly awarded wine producers, winning the Best Portuguese producer in both the New York International and Berlin International Competitions in 2023, adding to many other awards they have won over many years. The company is headed by Portugal’s top winemaker José Neiva, who has had a highly successful wine producing career spanning almost 50 years.

José Neiva was born in the property adjacent to the vineyards (and winery) at Quinta de Porto, in the Alenquer region some 60 kilometres North of Lisbon. Although a larger producer than we normally include in our portfolio, we are impressed with the quality of grapes and wines achieved by DFJ Vinhos, who grow grapes in several wine regions from Lisboa, to Douro, Tejo and Alentejo areas, controlling 300 hectares of vineyards.

About the Region

The Vinho Regional Lisboa region (previously known as Estremadura) extends north and west of Lisbon, following the rugged Atlantic coastline. The windswept rolling landscape is dotted with old windmills and modern wine turbines, overseeing vineyards and pine forest.

It is the third largest wine producing region, enjoying a maritime climate that allows production of fresh whites and balanced red wines.  in the central northern area of Portugal, South of the Douro, is one of the oldest regions in the country. Like most Portuguese red wines with oak ageing, this wine has a cork closure.
