Merayo Tres Filas has intense, fresh and elegant aromas of dark cherry fruit with layers of strawberry, raspberry together with hints of violets, vanilla oak and forest floor. Its flavours reveal a lovely combination of freshness and complexity.
THIS WINE IS TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK
Tres Filas gets its name from one of Pedro Merayo’s vineyards which has gnarly bush vines aged 80 to 120 years old, where the grapes for this wine were harvested. The quality of fruit from these very old vines shines through this savoury red. It has soft and silky tannins, hints of spice and excellent balance, structure and length.
We have long been fans of the unoaked Mencia from Pedro Merayo but this is a real step up and a must-try wine with sensitive 6 months oak ageing in French and American oak. Mencia has been described as the Pinot Noir of Spain, and it has similar characteristics of fresh, refined fruit, smoothness and light structure. This is something different and very distinctive in character from the widely planted Tempranillo grape found in many Spanish wines. The 2020 vintage sold very quickly and we believe the 2021 vintage (which received 91 Points from the Spanish Penin Guide) is of the same standard. Only 35,000 bottles are made annually.
Review of 2020 Vintage – Decanter World Wine Awards Platinum Medal & Best in Show
“Our Best in Show journey across Northern Spain continues with a 2020 Bierzo, grown just across the provincial border from Galicia into Castilla y Léon. It’s another zone of steep slopes and old vines – the variety in this case being Mencia (known as Jaen in Portugal’s Dão region).
This wine is deep black-red in colour and vivacious and urgent in aroma: wild plums mingled with the woodland scents of leaf, copse and forest floor. The palate is fruit-packed and vibrant, vigorous with an energy derived both from ripe acidity and fresh though smooth tannins; look out, too, for a stony, bitter-edged finish perhaps derived from the region’s slate soils. Wonderful drinking now in the flush of youth, but fruit of this quality will hold well for a few years yet. 97 Points Platinum Award, Decanter”
The low-yielding 80+ old vines (some of 120 years old) produce wonderfully concentrated grapes for this wine which is made by Pedro Merayo’s son and skilled winemaker, Juan Merayo. The grapes are hand-picked and collected in small boxes which are placed in temperature controlled vehicles and taken quickly to the winery for controlled, careful fermentation. The wine is subsequently placed in French and American oak barrels for 6 months ageing and bottled without further filtrations. This ensures that the wine is fully of fresh, perfumed characters and ripe red fruit, that is so evocative of this lovely grape, Mencia, The oak gives this wine a supple finish.
Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo are a small, family-producer in the hills of DO Bierzo in North West Spain, which is the home of the Mencia grape. The vineyards are near Villafranca, close to the Camino de Santiago de Compostella (The Pilgrims Way) and during our visit to Pedro’s scenic vineyards, we could see walkers making their way along the Camino!
The Merayo family have been growing grapes for generation in Bierzo. Pedro Merayo has 25 hectares of well established and immaculate vineyards, which includes 80 – 120+ year old bush vine Mencia. Older vines produce a lower yield of grapes with great concentration, which makes for more complex wines.
Such is the care and attention to his vineyards, Pedro Merayo has observed other vignerons taking photos of his vineyards to pass them off as theirs! Attention to detail in the vineyards, hand-picked grapes and careful winemaking by Pedro’s son, Juan Merayo is producing excellent results. This wine gained 91 points in Guia Penin, an independent Spanish Wine Guide. Merayo Tres Filas really is a wine worth discovering and it is amazing value for such a flavoursome, smooth, complex, medium-bodied red.
