Tasting Notes

Sumarroca Brut Reserva is a significant step up on everyday Cava, and it is organic! It has pear and pastry aromas which lead you into a refined, fresh and fruity fizz with full flavours. At the same time it is nicely balanced with just a hint of citrus on its smooth, long finish. Cava is often overlooked in favour of other fizz, which is a pity as this Reserva demonstrates.

Reserva  Cavas must have 15 months on the lees; Sumarroca Brut Reserva Cava has 24 months on its lees and it is organic.  Whereas, everyday Cavas that are a more simple wine, with less flavour development, have just 9 months on the  lees.

We have always been impressed with the lightness of family-run Sumarroca Cavas and their commitment to organic principles and were pleased to see that they achieved organic certification; a Reserva Cava. The 2018 vintage, won a Gold Medal at Berlin Wine Awards 2021 and achieved Best Cava Award 2021 in Mundus Vini international competition; the follow on vintages of 2020 and 2021 are equally good.

Cava is made in the traditional method with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. This truly is elegant fizz at a great price and a million miles from mass produced Cava and dare we say it, mass produced Prosecco!

About the Winery

The Sumarroca family have grown grapes for generations and in 1982, Carlos Sumarroca a highly respected viticulturist, and his wife Nuria, bought the 15th century estate, establishing one of the few estate only grown Cava producers in Spain. They practice sustainable farming, harvesting at night and only use free-run juice in their cavas. Their winery is terraced along a hillside so that all movement of the wine is by gravity. In 2014 they decided to seek organic certification, which they achieved in 2018.

Their main estate has 400 hectares, split into 100 different vineyards located in the Monistrol d’Anoia (near Sant Sadurni), inland between Tarragona and Barcelona. It is protected by the Montserrat mountain range and benefits from an inland wind the “terral” which tempers the Mediterranean summer climate. It is surrounded by forests and features 3 ravines on the estate, which encourages biodiversity; their range of birds is notable with short-toed eagle, salamander and black starlings. They make their own organic compost from their own livestock which live in the ravine areas; they fertilise one third of their vineyards each year. The vineyards are chalky, clay and loam, which is good for vine growing. These conditions give the base for elegant wines with a fresh fruitiness that are well balanced.
