Tasting Notes

Abel Mendoza Jarrarte Blanco is an absolutely stunning White Rioja. As soon as you take in its intense, layered aromas of white peach and hints of flowers you know immediately that you are about to taste a special, elegant wine. The flavours almost explode in your mouth, it is complex, fresh, there is peach, pear and some tropical hints, plus fennel and minerals in the background. This is an impressive, highly accomplished, textured white wine that is beautifully pure, fresh and very long.

It is an intriguing blend of indigenous grapes, mainly Viura and Malvasía, but unusually 10% of the grapes in this wine are Torrontes, Tempranillo Blanco and Garnacha Blanca; all hand-picked from old vines. After fermentation in stainless steel, Abel Mendoza Jarrarte spends time on its lees with gentle “battonage” or stirring. This gives additional flavour and texture, and the wine is fresh and unhindered by oak. A new wine from this top producer who is identified as a “First Growth” Rioja producer by Tim Atkin MW (in the same league as Muga).

We were delighted to see that 2022 vintage was awarded 93 Points (Highly Recommended) in Decanter’s blind Tasting of White Riojas for the Decanter Rioja Guide 2024:

“Fine, floral aromas and creamy, white fruit. Plump, soft and appealing with delicate spice. Nicely textured with a long rounded finish.  Drink 2024 – 2028”

About Abel Mendoza

Abel Mendoza has 20 hectares of individual vineyard parcels scattered in and around San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It is one of the smallest estates in Rioja, located high up on the border of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Abel comes from a typical Rioja wine family of two generations who grew grapes to sell on to other wine producers. At that time the wines produced were “vino de cosechero” often made by carbonic maceration and sold in bulk to be drunk within the year. In 1988, at aged 19 Abel decided to make and bottle his own wines and just 6 years later in 1994, he chose to only produce high quality wines. He invested in expensive French Oak barrels; his family were very sceptical about this move, but with the help of his wife Maite Fernandez an oenologist, they built their reputation.

Abel Mendoza and his wife Maite, are recognised as a top Rioja producer and they were identified in Tim Atkin MW Rioja Report as “Winemakers of the Year” in 2015. (Other notable winners include Jorge Muga and Telmo Rodriguez.)  More than anything in the world, Abel cares for his vineyards, each plot tended to enable an authentic expression of the location, and harvested entirely by hand. He pays huge attention to his vineyards verging on an obsession, with minimum intervention, sustainability and improving the vineyards for the future at the heart of his philosophy.

In the words of Pedro Ballesteros MW, “Their winemaking principles are simple to define, but difficult to apply: know and respect your roots; explore the best expressions of your vines and wines, with no constraints to innovation; accept diversity; push for top quality and look beyond your lifetime, with the hope of leaving your land in a better state.”

“Instead of replacing the unpopular Malvasía Riojana and Torrontés varieties, they have used them to create some of the best whites in Rioja”.  Abel and Maite’s wines – and their ethos – are a benchmark for all. Pedro Ballesteros MW 2022
