Zephyr Sauvignon Blanc is an enigmatic and restrained kiwi Sauvignon Blanc very much in the Pouilly Fumé style from the outstanding Marlborough 2020 vintage. It has light floral and complex aromas of crisp apples, white peach, gentle gooseberry and almost saline minerality. The aromas are still developing, but when you taste this wine you experience a real ‘wake-up” with its full and layered flavours of crisp Galia melon, white peach, light gooseberry and herbal hints. It has superb texture, and zesty acidity whilst being smooth at the same time. Zephyr Sauvignon Blanc 2020 vintage is the first vintage that this wine has been fully certified organic; something the Glover family have been working towards over the past 5 years.
There is a lovely flinty mineral quality about this wine which needs to be drunk at around 10 – 12 C to appreciate its range of flavours and textures.

Ben Glover, a highly respected and talented winemaker has spent two decades working for many top NZ wine brands, including Wither Hills and Lindauer, now heads up his family-run vineyards and winery. Named Zephyr as they experience lovely sea breezes from the sea which is just 3 kms at Cloudy Bay. The vineyards are in the lee of the Wither Hills to the South East of the Wairau River Valley floor and the Opawa River forms their Southern boundary. The close proximity to the sea imparts unique flavours to their wines.
The grapes are grown in the renowned Marlborough sub region of Dillons Point. This Sauvignon Blanc captures wonderful aromatics and tropical notes. The fruit comes from their Kerseley Estate single vineyard. It is quickly pressed off skins with free run juice kept separate. It then undergoes a cold fermentation with selected Blanc yeast and is aged on light lees for around 4 months to ensure the wines express the true vineyard expression.
About the Winery & Vineyards
For over 4 generations the family farm was a successful dairy operation. Owen Glover (Ben’s father) dedicated much of his life to developing a revered pedigree Friesian herd. After realising none of his 4 children were interested in getting up at 5am and observing other starting to plant vines, the family did their research and believed their land had the potential to produce world class wines. The vineyards were planted in 1988 and some 30 years later these maturing vines are showing their true potential. The wines show classic cool climate precision matched with palate depth and the ability to support texture.
About the vintage
The 2020 vintage will be remembered as a challenging one as a few weeks into picking NZ declared a national lockdown for Covid-19. However, wine was listed as an “essential service” and so harvesting and wine-making continued, observing Covid restrictions. It was an excellent vintage with good weather throughout the growing season. A prolonged “Indian Summer” with sunny days and cool nights led to expressive wines with great natural acidity. 2020 is considered to be one of the very best in Marlborough, producing vibrant wines with energy and ripe concentrated flavours which also showed complexity, elegance and minerality. “Although most wine-lovers will enjoy their NZ Sauvignon Blancs within a year of the vintage, don’t be afraid to keep them – the style is more age-worthy than you think.” says Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier who suggests this wine will develop with ease through to 2026.
