Tasting Notes

A classy, full, yet restrained New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Wairau River Reserve Sauvignon is a stunning Sauvignon Blanc in the Sancerre style, which comes from Phil and Chris Rose beautiful vineyards in Rapaura, Marlborough. What makes this Sauvignon Blanc stand out is its complexity, with nettles and lovely blackcurrant leaf aromas, coupled with a flintiness and light tropical fruit flavours. It is a textured, full flavoured Sauvignon Blanc with beautiful balance and excellent length.

This wine has been made from small, interesting parcels of grapes on the Estate that have stood out during the season. They are harvested in the cool hours of the morning and left on the skins for 6 hours before gentle pressing. Following fermentation the wine is left on its lees for 2 months before bottling. This Sauvignon Blanc has 10% of barrel fermented Sauvignon in the blend, which provides a riper spectrum of tropical fruit to balance the flinty freshness, and a terrific mouthfeel.

Phil and Chris Rose were pioneers in the late 1970s when they planted the Vineyards near the banks of the beautiful braided Wairau River. Originally they grew grapes for other producers, like Cloudy Bay. In 1991 they decided to produce their own wine and started more extensive planting, building a winery in 2002. Today, they are joined by 5 children and extended family, making this one of the foremost 100% family owned vineyards, with some of the most mature vineyards, in Marlborough. The land bordering Wairau River is at the foot of the Richmond Range of hills; it enjoys long warm days and cold nights providing favourable conditions for growing quality grapes.

About the vintage

The 2017 vintage in Marlborough saw excellent, settled weather during the flowering period, producing an even and balanced crop. It was a cooler than average Summer and harvest occurred during the first 2 weeks of April and the grapes were of high quality, with optimal balance of sugar and acids. This vintage could well rival the Platinum Trophy winning 2016 Wairau River Reserve Sauvignon Blanc.
