Tasting Notes

This aptly named Strandveld First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Southern most winery in South Africa. The vineyards are just 9 kilometres from the sea, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian Ocean off Cape Agulhas.

The wonderfully fresh and elegant herbaceous aromas of tropical fruit and citrus get your attention. Strandveld First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc has a beautiful balance of crisp, fresh minerally Sauvignon Blanc flavours. At the same time it is complex, mouth-filling and very long.

This is cool climate Sauvignon Blanc and not dissimilar to a Sancerre. It has 5 months on its lees, which gives it the full, refined flavours. The combination of around 12 – 14% Semillon in the final blend of this Sauvignon Blanc is hardly detectable, but adds depth and texture. The 2018 vintage of this wine won a Gold Medal at Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 and many other accolades.

“Genuine lively, fresh nettle and elderflower aromas. Very typical and expressive with cool climate Sauvignon notes. Super balance on the fresh yet powerful palate.” 96 Points. Gold Medal Decanter World Wine Awards 2019.

“Displays genuinely lively fresh nettle and elderflower aromas. Very expressive wine with typical cool-climate grass and white citrus notes and a wonderfully balanced palate that is both intense and fresh, with seriously persistent length and focus. Drink this in its first year or two for the extra freshness and vigour.”  Greg Sherwood MW. 93 points: Drink 2019 – 2022 (2018 vintage) Highly Recommended

About the Winery

At almost 35 degrees below the equator, the maritime climate has below average temperatures for the Cape. Here, the winds can be so strong that vineyard workers find it hard to stand up! “Strandveld” refers to the coastal belt of land which spans the coastline around Africa’s tempestuous southernmost tip at Cape Agulhas. It is characterised by severe wind, mist and cool temperatures. This confluence of maritime climate, varying site and soil types create the diversity of terroir that distinguishes the wines of Strandveld Vineyards. We are great fans of this vineyard and also stock their First Sighting Shiraz,

Conrad Vlik, winemaker at Strandveld since 2004, focuses  on producing excellent quality grapes in this cool climate. Yields are low, the grapes ripen slowly and the berries are small; as a result the wines have intense flavours. The 69 hectares estate and winery was established in 2001, and already the winery has achieved many awards.

Food match: A brilliant aperitif; will also partner seafood, pasta dishes, salads, vegetarian dishes and goats cheese.
