Tasting Notes

Schubert Marion’s Vineyard Pinot Noir is typical of Schubert’s wines which are always truly elegant and complex. This vintage displays a refined, strawberry and dark cherry fruit nose; at the same time it is smoky with classic hints of the “forest floor.” This is followed by complex layers of savoury strawberry, blackcurrant and cherry fruit with hints of liquorice and spice coupled with terrific finesse. Beautifully poised and well structured Pinot Noir with brilliant length, silky and smooth on the finish. It has been aged in French oak barriques for 18 months (35% new French oak). Schubert Marion’s Vineyard Pinot Noir is named after one of the owners of this prestige winery.

Kai and his partner Marion Delmling met at Guisenheim University whilst studying viticulture and oenology in Germany and travelled the world sometimes together, sometimes separately, with the idea of finding a vineyard to produce their own pinot noir. Travelling as widely as Oregon and California to many parts of Europe, until eventually they came to Martinborough in North Island, or Wairarapa as it is known in New Zealand. They fell in love with the place and the Pinot Noir’s produced there.  In 1998 they acquired an established 3 hectare vineyard plus a further 40 hectares and planted mainly Pinot Noir.

Martinborough has a cool climate with a big diurnal variation in the growing season and a long, dry autumn. The climate and soils are perfect for Pinot Noir, and the vines produce naturally low yield of small berries with thick skins, all of which enhances the powerful and nuanced flavours of their wines. They also practice organic vineyard management. Marion is the winemaker and Kai focuses on marketing their wines in 40 different countries. Kai jokes that with a population in New Zealand of only 4 million people, they need to export; they successfully export some 85% of their production.

Year on year they win awards and accolades for their wonderful Pinot Noir’s. This wine is made from two Pinot Noir clones; the Pommard clone and so-called Abel clone which is rumoured to have been taken from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s vineyards and is exclusive to New Zealand.
