Tasting Notes

Schubert BlockB Pinot Noir is typical of Schubert’s wines which stand out for their brilliant quality. Powerful, intense, complex multi-layered aromas wake up the senses when you first open a Schubert Block B Pinot Noir. This is an exceptional vintage of this wine that has been rated as “Outstanding” by Decanter magazine, with a stunning 95 points. The aromas remind you of blackcurrant, strawberry and cherries along with nuances of herbs, smoke and the “forest floor.”  It has a wonderfully rich, ripe, and complex palate, with concentrated black fruit, strawberries, cherries, plums, spice, liquorice and mineral hints. Schubert BlockB Pinot Noir is a truly exceptional wine.

It is a rich and luscious, deeply flavoured Pinot Noir and the terrific savoury flavours go on and on. A powerful finish of well-structured tannins and pure finesse in this medium to full bodied Pinot Noir. It has been aged in 45% new and 55% used French oak barriques for 18 months. More full-bodied and richer than Schubert’s (more feminine wine) “Marion’s Vineyard” Pinot Noir. Only 500 cases of this wine is made; we are thrilled to be able to stock this wine. A real treat and probably half the price of a similar Burgundy, for what you would pay for an everyday + bottle of wine in a restaurant.

The reviews of the Decanter team which rated this wine as “OUTSTANDING”

“Meaty, spicy aromas with a minty palate: concentrated and complex, combining sweet cherry fruit with classic earthy and mushroom notes, and a mere touch of vanilla. Herbal, savoury earthy, with a decent finish.” James Doige : Decanter magazine panellist February 2020

“Bright aromatic perfumed nose, cherry fruit on the palate with great intensity and layers of texture. Fruit and then unmistakeable flavours of Martinborough, long and lingering. A stunning wine.” Roger Jones : Decanter magazine panellist February 2020

“Persuasive, attractive, inviting nose. Juicy and elegant with lovely purity of fruit, a hint of savoury complexity and persistent finish.” Dirceu Vianna Junior MW : Decanter magazine panellist February 2020  95 Points: Outstanding:  Drink 2021 – 2028

About the winery

Kai and his partner Marion Deimoing met at Guisenheim University whilst studying viticulture and oenology in Germany and travelled the world sometimes together, sometimes separately, with the idea of finding a vineyard to produce their own pinot noir. Travelling as widely as Oregon and California to many parts of Europe, until eventually they came to Martinborough in North Island, or Wairarapa as it is known in New Zealand. They fell in love with the place and the Pinot Noir’s produced there.  In 1998 they acquired an established 3 hectare vineyard plus a further 40 hectares and planted mainly Pinot Noir. Block B is a selection from Dijon Pinot Noir clones, with hand-picked grapes 100% destemmed and left on skins for three weeks during fermentation in stainless steel.

Martinborough has a cool climate with a big diurnal variation in the growing season and a long, dry autumn. The climate and soils are perfect for Pinot Noir, and the vines produce naturally low yield of small berries with thick skins, all of which enhances the powerful and nuanced flavours of their wines. They also practice organic vineyard management. Marion is the winemaker and Kai focuses on marketing their wines in 40 different countries. Kai jokes that with a population in New Zealand of only 4 million people, they need to export; they successfully export some 85% of their production.
