Tasting Notes

We are pleased to introduce Santiago Red, a very attractive, easy-going, smooth young wine, from Portugal. It seemed only natural to embrace the wines from the whole of the Iberian Peninsula!  It provides a lovely contrast to our Spanish reds.

Santhiago has aromas of brambly fruit combine with wild herbs, basil and spice lead you into a fresh, light to medium-bodied red, which is extremely approachable with juicy, blackberry and blueberry fruit. It has an elegant structure, smooth tannins and good length. Above all it is unmistakably Portuguese.

Santhiago is a blend of indigenous Portuguese varietals with Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez and Trincadeira and a proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are carefully picked, transported in small boxes to the winery, where the varieties are vinified separately with no oak intervention. It is made by the oldest wine company in Portugal, the Real Compania Velha whose focus is Ports and wines from the Douro, but they have branched out successfully to produce this cracking young red from the Lisboa region.

About the Region and the Winery

Vinho Regional Lisboa is a term used to identify the wines of the Lisboa (Lisbon) region. The majority of the vineyards in this region are located North of Lisbon city and range from cooler climates near the Atlantic ocean to warmer, drier climates inland. The Real Companhia Velha is the oldest wine company in Portugal having recently celebrated 260 years of uninterrupted port production. Founded in 1756 by the King of Portugal, this company represents some of the finest Quintas in the Douro. Old, but not our of touch, they have been able to preserve and honour the traditional winemaking while investing in the future with constant modernisation and experimentation in their vineyards.
