Manzanos Tempranillo Roble 2017 (1 bottle)
A lightly oaked Rioja made mainly from Tempranillo. It has aromas of ripe black and red fruits, spices, liquorice and chocolate. A nicely fruity, round and well-balanced red from family producer Bodegas Manzanos. It has spent six months ageing in mostly French oak, with some use of American oak barrels. This will partner pasta dishes perfectly.
Almaraz Tempranillo 2017 (1 bottle)
An appealing, soft and very lightly oaked Rioja. Made from 90% Tempranillo grapes from 2016 harvest and 10% of grapes from Medievo Crianza 2015. A fresh young wine, with the interest of a more developed wine. From Bodegas del Medievo, an exciting and innovative small winery just South of Logroño, who are producing modern, fruity Riojas.
Medievo Selección Especial 2015 (1 bottle)
Spicy, blackberry and cherry fruit aromas with cedary notes, coupled with a succulent, fruity palate. This wine has great balance from its 6 month in American oak barrels; technically it is known as a Roble. However, it is the equal of many Rioja Crianzas with a lovely smooth texture and a touch of complexity. From the very good 2015 vintage.
Cerro Añon Crianza 2015 (1 bottle)
91 points Tim Atkin MW Special Rioja Report 2018
Classic Rioja Crianza with a warm, moreish and elegant palate showing blackcurrants, berries and plums and hints of mocha and herbs on the finish. It has been aged in American oak for 14 months and has a touch of sweetness on the tannins. Made from grapes from 20+ year old vines in the Rioja Alta and aged for 14 months in American oak.
This wine was also selected in the Top 100 Riojas UK 2017 Tasting Panel. From Bodegas Olarra; this Crianza is consistently good. Perfect with roast lamb.
Luis Cañas Crianza 2014/15 (1 bottle)
91 points Penin Guide
Rich blackcurrant and raspberry aromas with hints of balsam and cedary oak. This leads you into its concentrated, structured black fruit palate which is complex and savoury. It has finesse, excellent balance and length. Just a few bottles left of the 2014 vintage which is followed by the similarly very good 2015 vintage, which has a touch of a creamy oak nose with enticing balsam hints and a similar taste profile to 2014 vintage with rich fruit flavours and smooth round tannins.
A complex and structured Crianza, that is more like a Reserva in style and quality. From a top Rioja family-run producer in Rioja Alavesa.
Bodegas Urbina Crianza 2009 (1 bottle)
Decanter Silver Medal 2012; 92 Points Tim Atkin MW Special Rioja Report 2018
This is what mature Rioja is all about. A smooth, elegant wine in perfect balance. Intense strawberry, blackberry aromas with refined vanilla notes that immediately appeal. It has complex, creamy, smooth black fruit flavours and some firm tannins in the background. Silky and savoury with excellent length.
This wine was the Chair’s Choice Crianza in the Top 100 Rioja Wines UK 2017. From a family-run, Single Estate, whose 75 hectares of vineyards have been in the family for four generations. This wine will be drinking well until 2020 at least, but it is delicious now.
