Tasting Notes

Ramon Bilbao Viñedos de Altura Crianza has fresh red fruit and inviting spicy notes on the nose, coupled with toasty oak aromas. Juicy mulberry and raspberry flavours develop with a silky warmth and combine with balsamic nuances. There is also a hint of chocolate and sweet spice there too. This is a full-flavoured, complex Rioja Crianza. It has a velvety mouthfeel, subtle tannins coupled with excellent structure, balance and brilliant length.

This limited edition Crianza gets its name from the high altitude vineyards, where the grapes are grown for this wine. It is an unusual blend of 50/50 Tempranillo/Garnacha. The Tempranillo comes from vineyards at 700 metres in Villaba de Rioja (Rioja Alta); the Garnacha from 650 metres near Tudelilla (just in Rioja Baja). Although the vineyards are some 80 kilometres apart they are usually harvested around the same time.

Made from hand-picked, hand-selected grapes from 30 years old vines, the varietals are vinified separately in stainless steel initially and then undergo a malolactic fermentation in new French oak.  It is the aged in 236 selected French oak barrels for 15 months. 64,580 bottles are produced and each one is individually numbered.

Ramon Bilbao is a well-established family-run Bodega of medium size in Haro, in Rioja Alta. They make mainly Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva Wines.  However, they also make three wines with more individual styles – Edicion Limitada Crianza, Viñedos de Altura Crianza and a high-end wine “Mirto”.

Another very popular Rioja from Ramon Bilbao at an exceptional price from us.

Food match: Roasted meats; Lamb has a particular affinity with Rioja Crianza
