Ramon Bilbao Edición Limitada Crianza has rich aromas of black fruit and inviting black pepper and spicy notes on the nose, coupled with complex aromas of cocoa and chocolate mingled with oak hints. Intense black fruit flavours develop with a silky warmth and combine with liquorice nuances and subtle oak. This 2017 vintage is a full-flavoured, complex Rioja Crianza with a pure fruit focus. It has a velvety mouthfeel, ripe tannins coupled with excellent structure, balance and brilliant length; Ramon Bilbao Edición Limitada Crianza offers a different and more opulent style of Rioja, which retains an elegance and freshness at the same time. This Edicion Limitada Crianza receives consistently great reviews, and you can see Tim Atkin MW recent reviews below.
It is fermented in oak vats and then aged in selected 225 litre French oak barricas for 14 months. This is made in the same way as Ramon Bilbao’s top wine Mirto and although this is a traditional method (ie without any use of stainless steel) the result is an ambitious, modern style, rich Rioja. It is made from hand-picked, hand-selected Tempranillo grapes from 40 + year old vines from a single vineyard area in Ávalos at 650 metres in the Rioja Alta. The result is a wine that is close to a top Reserva in style.
Ramon Bilbao is a well-established family-run Bodega of medium size in Haro, in Rioja Alta. They make mainly Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva Wines. However, they also make three wines with more individual styles – Edicion Limitada Crianza, Viñedos de Altura Crianza and a high-end wine “Mirto”.
“Sourced entirely from the north-western corner of the Rioja Alta, this refreshing pure Tempranillo confirms the move away from toasty oak at Ramón Bilbao towards wines with more fruit expression and balance. Scented, racy and refined with lovely focus and brightness.” 93 Points – Drink 2022-27: Tim Atkin MW Special Report Rioja 2020 (2017 Vintage)
“This intensely coloured Tempranillo is sourced from sources as diverse as Cuzcurrita, Labastida, Ábalos and Briones and aged in new wood. Liquorice and blackberry flavours dominate on the palate with some mocha oak, fresh acidity and deftly extracted tannins.” 93 Points – Drink 2019 – 2026: Tim Atkin MW Special Report Rioja 2019 (2016 Vintage)
