Quintas do Homem is the epitome of Vinho Verde from the Minho region of Portugal. Abundantly fresh with aromas of citrus, nectarine fruit with hints of tropical and light candied fruit. It has superb full flavours of nectarines, citrus and light canteloupe melon nuances. This is a great quality Vinho Verde made from Loureiro, Arinto and Alvarinho and, at only 11.5% abv, it is pure, fine and elegant with excellent length.
Quintas do Homem is located in the Braga district in the heart of the Minho region, the northern-most wine area of Portugal, just 40 miles South of the Spanish Border and the Rias Baixas wine area of Spain. It was established in 1985 by Antonio Miranda with two vineyard estates totalling 22 hectares. The Minho region is named after the River which forms the border between Spain and Portugal and is an area renowned for the production of high quality Vinho Verdes – wines of purity with a great level of intensity but retaining a more-ish delicacy. It’s proximity to the Atlantic is one of the reasons for the production of these light, crisp white wines.
Nuno and his father Antonio take meticulous care of their two vineyards, Quinta da Veiga and Quinta do Paço, where they grow indigenous varieties of Loureiro, Arinto, Alvarinho, Fernao Pires and Vinhao. Ana Coutinho is the wine-maker and very much a part of the family. She sets high standards and, like most good winemakers she says the wine starts in the vineyards – “provide me with high quality grates and I will produce high quality wine.”
In 2011 the family modernised their winery with modern wine-making equipment including pneumatic presses, computer controlled stainless steel fermenting tanks and a bottling line producing 1500 bottles per hour. Their viticulture is certified as an “integrated production” a system defined by the International Organisation for Biological and integrated production. (IOBC). This is based on sustainability and the application of natural resources, using organic and biodynamic fertilisers and employing environmentally sound production methods.
