Bodegas Muga Selección Especial Reserva 2011 is a stunning, limited edition Reserva only made in very good years. Dark, brambly and red fruit together with subtle oak aromas are coupled with balsamic, mint and liquorice notes. The mature berry fruit flavours are intense and complex with peppery spice, and coffee hints coupled with excellent balance and length. It is ready for drinking now but we would recommend decanting this wine if drinking in 2017 to fully enjoy its complexity.
Bodegas Muga is a family-run Bodega, established in 1932. They combine traditional and modern practices; from highly selected, hand-picked grapes in their varied vineyard plots, to their amazing attention to detail throughout the wine-making and ageing processes.
Year on year their Reserva Seleccion Especial is superb, and this is no exception, gaining 93 points in both the Penin Guide in Spain and Wine Spectator in USA. Fermented with indigenous yeast in oak vats and then aged for 26 months in oak casks (mainly French oak), it is fined with egg white before bottling and spending a further 12 months in bottle before release from the Bodega.
With careful cellaring the 2011 vintage will age magnificently and be drinking into 2020s. A real treat of a full-bodied, refined Rioja Reserva. Muga have their own cooperage where they make their own oak barrels, which is unique; they achieve finesse from barrel fermentation and ageing, that sets them apart from other similar top Rioja Bodegas.

“Deep colour, fleshy savoury style with rich, dark chocolate. Juicy, ripe fruit. Full bodied, long finish.”
