Medievo Crianza has ripe berry nose with spices, oak balsamic and toasty notes. It has full flavours of blackberry, cherry and strawberry fruit with balsamic and a nice touch of cedary oak. There is a good balance of acidity, tannins and structure which give it good ageing potential. This vintage is still young and will develop into the smooth Medievo Crianza that our customers know, by the end of 2020.
Established in 2001 by a group of four quality-driven winegrower families, headed by the experienced and talented winemaker Santiago Garde. Bodegas del Medievo is an exciting, innovative winery in Aldeanueva de Ebro 50km South of Logroño, just in Rioja Oriental. They have 200 hectares of vineyards which are situated on the fringes of Mount Yerga, 600 metres above sea level. The climate is warmer than the Northern parts of of La Rioja; the Rioja Oriental is often described as Mediterranean. However, the altitude of Bodegas del Medievo provides optimal conditions for the cultivation of healthy grapes which provide great intensity of colour, producing modern, fruity wines that also capture the Rioja finesse.
Joseba and Santiago (viticulturist and winemaker respectively) set up this Bodega to produced high quality wines that offer great value. From their young wines like Almaraz through to Tuerce Botas Graciano Crianza, their wines have the hallmark of quality throughout.
About the Vintage
2017 was a smaller harvest than the previous, abundant 2016 vintage. After a hard frost in April, the rest of the growing season was good. Rainfall was well below average, but the weather was warm resulting in lower yields, smaller berries, full flavours and good structure. The weather was excellent during the main growing season and there was a total absence of disease. This led to a very early harves which commenced in Rioja Oriental on 10 August, the earliest in Rioja history thus far. Overall the vintage was rated as Very Good with excellent quality of fruit. The wines will tend to have structure and have good ageing potential.
