This terrific Luis Cañas Rioja Case Offer is a limited offer to showcase their world class wines. Bodegas Luis Cañas is very much a family-run Bodega, with Juan Luis at the helm; he took over from his father in 1989 at the age of 33 and has expanded their range of wines, concentrating on aged wines. They are located in Villabuena, one of the best areas in the Rioja Alavesa. Their vineyards are sheltered under the Sierra Cantabria and they use organic practices. They are meticulous in everything they do from vineyards, to hand-picking and double hand-selection process of the grapes that go into all their wines. Neal Martin from The Wine Advocate has summed up the wines from this Bodega better than us.

Luis Cañas Viñas Viejas Blanco 2019/20 (2 bottles)
Classic white Rioja with aromas of pears, citrus fruit, hazelnuts and a hint of honeyed oak. The flavours combine greengage, melon with just a hint of vanilla and butter notes; it has a long finish with a light citrus uplift and excellent structure and elegance. What makes this wine special is the combination of mature vine Viiura and Malvasia harvested from 60 year old vines, fermented in new French and American barriques, before agening for 3 and a half months on its lees. An impressive white wine which will be perfect with smoked salmon, all seafood and shellfish, chicken, pork and vegetarian dishes. A delicious, lightly-oaked, versatile wine.

This Crianza has rich blackcurrant and raspberry aromas with hints of balsam and a touch of creamy oak. This leads you into its concentrated, structured red and black fruit palate which is complex and savoury. It has good structure, balance and length with smooth, round tannins. A blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Garnacha, It is made from grapes from over 40 year old vines, which provide the concentration of flavours. It has been aged in 60% French and 40% American barrels for 12 months. This is such an elegant and appealing Crianza, that is more like a Reserva in style and quality, and with careful cellarage will be drinking well to 2022/3; but it is perfect now!

Intense leather and cedary oak with blackberry and blackcurrant aromas and hints of balsam, liquorice and spice. The flavours show rich, dark berry fruits together with very full savoury layers of cocoa, oak and liquorice hints. It is mouth-filling with fantastic structure, a beautifully smooth balance and potential for ageing, although it is delicious now. 2015 was what is described as a “Mediterranean vintage” and was one of the earliest harvests in history. The quality is particularly outstanding in those wines made from vines located in the coooler areas with moderate vigour and limited production. This sums up Luis Cañas it is superb now and, with careful cellarage this wine will be drinking well to 2021/27.
A blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano, it is made from specially selected grapes from over 50 year old vines, which provide concentrated flavours. Like the Crianza it has been aged in mainly French oak barrels but for 18 months in mainly French oak and the barrels are two years old. This wine will be perfect with steak, lamb and full flavoured dishes and strong cheeses, like Manchego.
