Tasting Notes

Luis Cañas Reserva is a beautifully balanced, special wine from one of the top Rioja Bodegas. It has a spicy, blackcurrant nose with a touch of creamy oak. The flavours show flavourful dark berry fruits together with layers of cocoa, oak and balsam hints. It displays leafy tannins, good structure, real elegance and length. Overall a lighter style than Muga Reserva Especial but a step up on the very good Luis Cañas Crianza 2015.

Mostly young French oak barrels used in the barrel ageing process where it has spent 18 months, before a further year or so in bottle, ageing at the Bodega. It is made from not only hand-picked, but also hand-selected grapes, which ensures only the best grapes are used in this wine. The grapes come from vines over 40 years old, which provide intense, complex flavours. The inclusion of Graciano grape provides both structure and finesse.

Luis Cańas are a family-run Bodega, whose vineyards are situated in the best part of Rioja Alavesa; the care and attention from vineyards to wine-making and barrel ageing processes mark them out as one of the top Rioja Bodegas, producing wines that consistently win acclaim internationally.

The 2011 vintage was a excellent vintage and the good Reservas from this vintage are elegant and well structured. It was warmer than 2010, and as a result the good Reservas will have a good concentration and power. Drinking well now this Reserva will be drinking well through to 2020 at least. The follow on vintage is 2013 as the 2012 vintage was small. 2013 was the year in which Juan Luis Cañas and his team started to use a little less oak on his wines, to good effect.

Tim Atkin MW Review – 2013 vintage

“This assemblage of Tempranillo with 5% Graciano is still a modern style, with 20% new wood, but it’s spicy, refreshing and nuanced with some grip on the finish.  92 Points.  Drink 2019 – 2023.” Tim Atkin MW; Special Report Rioja 2019.
