Luis Cañas Crianza 2014 has rich blackcurrant and raspberry aromas with hints of balsamic and cedary oak. This leads you into its concentrated, structured black fruit palate which is complex and savoury. It has finesse, excellent balance and length. Just a few bottles left of the 2014 vintage which is followed by the similarly very good 2015 vintage, which has a touch of a creamy oak nose with enticing balsam hints and a similar taste profile to 2014 vintage with rich fruit flavours and smooth round tannins. It is complex and structured. We are always impressed by the quality and price of this stylish Crianza.
Year on year this Crianza from the Rioja Alavesa – the higher altitude part of Rioja – is more like a Reserva in elegance, complexity and depth of flavours.
It is made from hand-picked grapes from 40 year old vines, collected in small baskets and then hand-selected before vinification process. The wine is aged in 60% French 40% American 225 litre oak barrels for 12 months. Quality new oak is another hallmark of Bodegas Luis Cañas and for this Crianza the maximum age of the barrels is 3 years old.
Located in Villabuena in the Rioja Alavesa, the best area in Rioja, this family-run Bodega hand select the very best grapes for all their wines and use top quality oak barrels. They are renowned for their attention in their own vineyards and those they control all the way through to the selection of the grapes and the making of their wines. The result is world class, elegant wines with fruit wrapped in silky, oak laced layers.
