Tasting Notes

Bodegas As Laxas produce this consistent and excellent value Laxas Albariño. Intense layers of apricot, peach, and pear aromas leap out of the glass. It has full flavours which combine tropical and zesty fruits of pineapples, mangos, melons, grapefruit and citrus with nice minerality. Laxas Albariño stands out for value amongst top wines made from this grape. As well as the complex layers of fruits,  it has that little touch of salinity, which is difficult to define, but provides freshness in this enigmatic white wine which has a lovely silky mouthfeel and great depth of flavour. It is structured and elegant at the same time with a very long finish.

This is stunning value for a special Albariño and worth discovering. The 2021 vintage has received some excellent reviews:

“I like the stone and exotic fruit here, such as mango and papaya, as well as white preach. But then it turns to lemons. Medium to full-bodied, lightly creamy and fresh”  James Suckling 92 Points

“Restrained, white peach and pineapple nose. The palate is rich and honeyed with a nice tension with a complex aftertaste and a long finish.” 90 Points Decanter World Wine Awards Silver Medal 2022

About the Vineyards & Bodega

Founded in 1860, Bodegas As Laxas is a historic, family owned estate with a long tradition of winemaking. It was one of the first bodegas in the region to be awarded the status of DO Rias Baixas in 1988. They have continued to update their winery with the latest wine making facilities. Located in Arbo, on the banks of the River Miño, in the mountainous sub-zone of Condado de Tea in Pontevedra. The vineyards are over 30 years old and are on south-facing granite terraces, where they benefit from the influence of the Atlantic and the long hours of sunshine from this inland area of Rias Baixas.

The Albariño grape is difficult to grow, but produces exquisite wines that are aromatic, magnificently balanced and very flavourful. Research has shown that local yeasts are responsible for the aromatic character of the wine, and that yeasts are completely different from one vineyard to the next. The grapes come from 35 year old vines and are hand-picked into 20 kilo boxes and taken to the winery, cooled and then hand-selected before careful vinification.

This is a full flavoured, stylish, abundantly fruity Albariño with sufficient citrus acidity to make it refreshing, but not predominate. Delicious with anything from the sea!

Food match: Perfect with all shellfish, especially crab and prawns, fish with sauces and spicy Asian dishes
