The Pinot grapes for this wine come from younger vines (around 12 – 14 years old) in Langrug, one of Iona’s small farms in the Elgin Valley, with a unique terroir. Here diverse soils, fanned by cooling ocean breezes ensure perfect conditions for slow ripening, allowing the grapes to develop their intense flavours, complexity and finesse. The grapes are hand harvested and 10% are whole bunch fermented for complexity. The wine is subject to the careful and dedicated small wine making team led by Werner Muller. After fermentation and racking, It is matured in 2nd, 3rd and 4th fill French barriques for 11 months.
About the winery
Andrew and Rosy Gunn’s vineyards are located in the Highlands of Elgin to the South East of Cape Town. They are situated on a mountain plateau at 420 metres surrounded by the Kogelburg Nature Reserve where the prevailing winds off the cold Atlantic ocean, account for the layered nuances of their Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes ripen slowly here, often some 2 months later than other Cape vineyards. Winemaker, Werner Muller is one of the most highly respected winemakers in South Africa and Iona wine range continues to go from strength to strength. Although not certified Iona use organic and biodynamic practices in everything they do, from the cattle that graze on a part of the farm and provide manure to the geese and other birds who are kept in the estate to keep vineyard pests at bay.

Reviews and accolades
“Earthy, beetroot and redcurrant – very sophisticated, with some iodine and chocolate and a lovely savoury persistence. Slight smoky character on the finish, light palate but no lack of concentration. Unmistakeable Pinot character.” 16.5 Points, Jancis Robinson MW; Purple Pages
