Finca Manzanos Tempranillo is a lightly oaked Rioja made mainly from Tempranillo. It has aromas of ripe black and red fruits, spices, liquorice and chocolate. A nicely fruity and well-balanced youthful red which has many of the hallmarks of classic Rioja. After slow fermentation in stainless steel, the wine is then aged in French and American oak barrels mostly 2nd and 3rd year use, with just 10% new American oak barrels to provide the spice and toastiness. Finca Manzanos Tempranillo is a good everyday Rioja, at a great price.
It is made from hand-picked grapes from mostly 45 year old vines, in the area of Rioja Oriental which borders with Navarra. Victor Fernandez de Manzanos, is the fifth generation of the Manzanos family. Victor has run the business since 2010 together with his wife Laura and brother David. Between them they’ve transformed the company, bringing it into 21st century while retaining all the best aspects built up by the earlier generations. Victor is full of ambition and energy. As a grower, Victor is keen to prove that Rioja Oriental has its own distinct character and should not be judged as inferior – to Rioja Alta or Alavesa – just different.
About the Bodega
Bodegas Manzanos was established in 1890 and since then the family have steadily increased their vineyards and production. Victor Fernández de Manzanos Pastor, the father of the current CEO, designed and started the build of their new, impressive Bodega in 2002. This château style winery was finally in operation in 2007.
The winery is perched on the top of a hill, and it has been designed to use this location and incorporate four underground floors, each one for a different part of the wine-making process. This way, the wine comes down from one floor to the next one using gravity, and avoid pumping the wine.
