Tasting Notes

Manga del Brujo has a complex, rich, spicy damson and plum nose with hints of garrigue and chocolate. These are followed by rich strawberry, plum fruit flavours and pepper notes. This is a big wine which is superbly concentrated, elegant and yet burly at the same time! 5 months in oak barrel has given this intensely flavoured wine a perfect balance and great length. Hand-picked grapes from selected, very low-yield old vines give this wine it’s very special character. A delicious blend of Garnacha, Syrah with a touch of Tempranillo and Mazuelo; it is very much like a Rhone Valley village wine for example Cairanne and Vacqueras.

This wine is made from bush vine grapes grown in the limestone and slate soils of the Jiloca Valley at nearly 800 metres above sea level. The wild herbs amongst the vineyards give rise to the distinctive garrigue aromas in this Rhone-like red. This is our second red wine from El Escoces Volante (aka The Flying Scotsman) Norrel Robertson MW who just loves the unsung Garnacha grape.  He has worked with Bodega San Gregorio over the last 17 years with specific old Garnacha vines.

After his first degree at Aberdeen University, Norrel decided he wanted to know more about wine. He worked throughout the world in all aspects of growing and making wine which included taking a degree course in viticulture and oenology in New Zealand and achieving his Master of Wine (MW) qualification. Norrel decided he would settle in Spain where he was impressed by the quality of the Garnacha old vines in Calatayud, in the hills near Zaragoza. He now makes wine all over Spain, hence his name of El Escoces Volante, which means the “Flying Scotsman”, albeit he is usually driving his not-so-new car!

Check out our competitive price for this wine; some Independents sell at £14.99!

Norrel gives unusual names too all his wines; this time it is “Manga del Brujo”, which means the sorcerer’s sleeve! Year on year it receives high ratings in Guia Penin, an independent Wine Guide in Spain. See also his great value, younger red called “La Multa” the fine!  We have recently moved onto the 2017 vintage which has terrific fruit and is ready to drink. This is a review of the previous vintage we were selling:

“Nose shows ripe black fruit, a herbal character and a touch of sweet spices. On the palate it is richly flavoured, the tannins are really concentrated and it has a rounded delineation. It is powerful and intense; solid body and freshness.  2015 vintage – Drink 2018 – 2022  16 Points: Jancis Robinson MW Purple Pages.
