A smooth, concentrated and exuberant red with a huge berry fruit nose and palate, El Escoces Volante La Multa has character, lots of spicy well balanced damson/plum fruit and a sweet oak finish. It has scored very highly for a wine of this price, in Decanter (89 points), David Williams has identified this as a star wine in his Decanter Magazine article March 2020 “Around Spain in 10 Garnachas.”
La Multa is made with garnacha grapes from gnarly old bush vines by talented Scots wine maker Norrel Robertson MW in collaboration with Bodega San Gregorio in DO Calatayud, in the hills near Zaragoza. Norrell makes wine all over Spain, hence his name of El Escoces Volante, which means the “Flying Scotsman”, albeit he is usually driving his not-so-new car! If you like this wine, you will like his more serious wine “Manga del Brujo”.
The vines are planted on red clay over chalky soils at altitudes between 700 and 800 metres in the Ribota Valley. Garnacha as a grape variety, is making a come-back and many writers believe that it is Spain’s most exciting indigenous red grape variety. Norrel Robertson MW is a well-known protagonist of this grape variety and is regularly featured as one of the top wine producers of this grape in Spain. This wine has recently been reviewed by Decanter Magazine.
“One of many superb – and superbly priced – Garnacha bottlings from the flying Scotsman, Norrel Robertson MW, this wine is soft and generous in feel with its abundant fresh red fruit, old-vine depth and hints of herbal freshness. Drink 2020 – 2022. David Williams (Wine Writer and founding member of The Wine Gang.) Decanter March 2020.
After his first degree at Aberdeen University, Norrel decided he wanted to know more about wine. He worked throughout the world in all aspects of growing and making wine which included taking a degree course in viticulture and oenology in New Zealand and achieving his Master of Wine (MW) qualification. Norrel decided he would settle in Spain where he was impressed by the quality of the Garnacha old vines in Calatayud.
Norrel always gives his wines interesting names; La Multa means ‘the fine”. This is a great find from this overlooked DO in Aragon, NE Spain; put simply this is brilliant value.
