El Abuelo comes from Bodegas Piqueras in DO Almansa and joins our increasing number of organic wines. A blend of the indigenous Spanish grape Monastrell with Tempranillo. It has smoky, cherry and plum aromas coupled with spice and sage hints. Dark, sour cherry fruit flavours predominate with firm tannins. It is a good wine to accompany big flavoured dishes. If you prefer softer red wines at this price level, we recommend Te Quiero, Almaraz or Manzanos. If the label intrigues you, please read on and find out more about El Abuelo (Organic)!
El Abuelo, Spanish for The Grandfather, who is pictured on the striking label. It is a photo of Luis Piqueras who established the family vineyards and started making jug wine in 1915. In 1927 his lottery spend of 8 pesetas brought him luck and he won! With his winnings he invested in the original Piqueras winery. Bodegas Piqueras is now run by his grand-sons together with his 2 great grand-sons, who are also now working in the Estate and Bodega; a truly family-run producer. The Piqueras winery is located in a custom-built warehouse looking facility with modern facilities. It uses 100% renewable energy with 2500 square metres of solar panels which produce 100 kwh, which far exceeds their day-to-day requirements.
About the vineyards
This wine is made from dry-farmed 25 – 35 year old bush and trellised vines, located at 750 – 850 metres and 40 miles NW of Alicante (as the crow flies!). The vineyards are rich in limestone and are characterised by low fertility, low rainfall and a semi-arid climate. This produces richly aromatic wines of intense colour. The altitude provides a large contrast between day and night temperatures, especially during the ripening period in August/September, this is helpful in retaining freshness in the grapes. Summer temperatures can reach 40C in the Summer and -6C in the winter.
Organic production means a sustainable way of growing grape vines, with care and attention to the soils and environment for the longer term, and organic practices in the winery itself. All Piqueras wines are organic, although not all are labelled as such. DO Almansa is a perfect climate for organic production.
