Tasting Notes

Fresh pears and peaches with hints of citrus and butterscotch aromas. De Wetshof Bon Vallon Chardonnay 2018 is full, yet refreshing. Peach and pear flavours mingle with light buttery notes and zingy mineral flavours, providing a clean, long finish. This is an unoaked chardonnay which derives its excellent flavours from extended lees contact (around 5 months with weekly stirring!).

De Wetshof is one of the few 3rd generation wine estates in South Africa. A family-run winery, with Johann who focuses on the viticulture and has recently taken on the mantle of CEO (from father Daniel) who works closely with his brother Peter who focuses on the winemaking. They produce consistently high quality wines, especially chardonnays.

The 2017 vintage scored 91 points from Tim Atkin MW South Africa Report 2018; high points for a wine at this price point. This wine also received 90 points in The Wine Spectator (Robert Parker’s US team of wine writers) where 90 – 94 points denotes an “outstanding wine of superior character and style.”

“Bon Vallon comes from a rocky site with lots of limestone. Unoaked, like many a Chablis, this spends 120 days on its lees to put on more weight and balance the tangy, chalky minerality. Drink 2018 – 2023. Tim Atkin MW : South Africa Special Report 2018.

It also received very favourable comments from Andrew Jefford in Decanter Magazine

Classic varietal warmth and freshness – benchmark Chardonnay scents. Apple, lemon, melon, peach, crème anglaise aromas. Fresh, bright, vivid and juicy on the palate; satisfying mid-palate fullness and roundness of contour, with clean fruit definition. Fruits are a little more tropical on the palate than the nose. A delicious varietal wine; great value. Andrew Jefford
