Tasting Notes

Cuvee de Cair is a Roble (oak aged wine) from Dominio de Cair. Tempranillo is blended with a touch of Merlot and aged in oak for 9 months. The result is complex, layered aromas of black fruits, chocolate and mocha coupled with a rich, intense, highly structured palate of savoury black fruit with creamy oak notes and excellent length. It has a beautiful balance of tannins and fruit. Cuvee de Cair is a special wine, and if you enjoy this wine you should also treat yourself to their Trophy-winning Dominio de Cair Crianza too!!

In total the winery works 85 hectares of vines, located in the villages of La Aguilera, Quintana del Pidio, Gumiel de Mercado and Moradillo de Roa. At an altitude between 800 to 950 vines are planted on chalky-clay, sandy and gravel soils and have an average age of 25 years. Yields are controlled to a maximum of 4,500 kilos per hectare. The grapes are hand harvested and placed in small containers, which are taken direct to the winery where they pass through two tables where they are hand-sorted to ensure only the very best grapes go into the fermentation tanks.

The oak barrels used to age this wine for 9 months are 60% French oak and 40% American oak and they are aged between 1 and 3 years. The quality of the grapes grown at this altitude, the attention to detail in the winery and the quality of the oak barrels all contribute to produce a very high quality wine at a very good price ratio.

Juan Luis Cañas (who makes top Rioja wines) and Juan Jose Iribecampos joined forces in their aim to produce top wines from Ribera del Duero and they have succeeded with not one but two amazing wines. Dominio de Cair draws its name from the first two letters of the creators surnames – Cañas and Irebecampos. Their purpose-built, beautiful Bodega in Ribera del Duero enables the hand-picked grapes to go straight into the hand-sorting tables, and seamlessly to the vinification process and into oak barrels without any pumping.

Excellent value for this wine; sells in some Independent merchants £16.99 – £18.99.

Food match: A dinner party wine; perfect with grilled meats, especially Lamb. It will also accompany full-flavoured vegetarian dishes too.
