Crego e Monaguillo Godello is a stunning dry white wine! Inviting aromas of orange blossom, cut grass and apples followed by an intense and beautifully balanced palate of greengages and tropical fruit with a touch of lime. There are also buttery hints and overall it has a silky mouth-feel coupled with refreshing acidity. A complex white wine with terrific length. This definitely rivals Albariño, if you enjoy Laxas, Nora or other Albariños, we recommend you try this excellent find from the hills of Monterrei.
The Rodriguez family had been making wine in their small Bodega in Salguiera, near Verin in Galicia; close to the Portuguese border. In 2006 Ernesto and Tito Rodriguez decided to modernise their tiny Bodega. Initially they produced around 30,000 bottles a year and gradually, since then, with demand for their wines out-growing their facilities, they expanded their wine-making facilities to produce 700,000 bottles. The final expansion, (which was being finished when we visited them in April 2015), has enabled their production rise to nearly a million bottles. Each year they sell out of their wine!
They have 55 hectares of vineyards in the hills near the iconic castle that features on the DO Monterrei label and they also work with viticulturists and buy in additional grapes. Their name Crego e Monaguillo is Gallegan (the language of Galicia) for the Priest and the Altar Boy!. Ernesto is a practising Priest and Tito used to be an Altar Boy.
