Chapel Down Flint Dry is a terrific introduction to English dry white wine. An attractive, aromatic white with aromas of grapefruit zest and freshly cut grass. It has a crisp, refreshing palate with flavours of apple, pear and lime coupled with a well-balanced, long finish. Great to see this wine in Jane MacQuitty’s Top 20 English Wines in The Times, October 2020 and to see a recent review from Will Lyons in The Times.
Chardonnay, which is being successfully grown in England (mostly for Sparkling wines), leads the blend with a range german varietals. It is quite a kaleidoscope of varietals grown in Kent, Sussex and Essex. Each variety is whole-bunch pressed and vinified separately, and it was bottled in February 2020. The result is an appealing white wine, which combines finesse and the best of English white wines at a good price. When people first taste Chapel Down Flint Dry they are surprised just how good it is.
Chapel Down planted their vineyards in 1977 and are now the largest English wine producer, working with many vine growers across Sussex, Kent and Essex. Chief winemaker at Chapel Down is Josh Donaghay-Spire, who has a degree in Viticulture and Oenology from Plumpton College and gained his experience in Alsace, Champagne and South Africa.
