Tasting Notes

Chapel Down Bacchus from the good vintage of 2019 won a Silver Medal at Wine GB Awards in 2020; the 2020 vintage is equally good. Like the previous excellent vintages this is a crisp, refreshingly aromatic dry white wine characterised by melon, papaya, nettles and elderflower aromas. These follow through into the flavours of citrus and light tropical fruit together with an expressive zesty, long finish. It’s like a cross between a high class Sauvignon Blanc and a top Verdejo from Rueda (Spain) (a great accolade from us!), Chapel Down Bacchus is a consistently great wine and the warm summer of 2020 produced a high quality crop of grapes. The quality of the fruit together with the expertise of the wine making team can be discovered in this wine. The flavours go on and on!

Chapel Down’s talented head wine-maker, Josh Donaghay-Spire uses the respected whole-bunch pressing method with this wine, which retains its aromatic purity. It spends six months on its lees in tank before bottling in April 2020.

Bacchus is one of the most successful grapes grown for English still wines and is often referred to the Sauvignon Blanc of England! If you enjoy good Marlborough Sauvignon or full-flavoured Sancerre, you should try this! Lovely now, this wine will develop its complexity. Made from grapes grown in Chapel Down vineyards in Kent, Sussex and Essex.

Food Match:  Perfect with goats cheese, salads, seafood or Thai dishes.

“From England’s fourth most planted grape variety, this is a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. It displays green apple, gooseberry and freshly cut grass. It is light, crisp and fresh with a tangy edge and some elderflower notes on the finish.”   Decanter Tasting Panel 2017
