Tasting Notes

Bodegas Urbina Crianza 2012 oozes the classic, elegance and charm of a mature Rioja. This is a beautifully refined wine in perfect balance – this is what mature Rioja is all about! We are enjoying the 2017 Rioja Crianzas at the moment, but this is something different to discover. Bodegas Urbina Crianza 2012 has been judged as worthy of 92 points from Tim Atkin MW in his 2021 Special Rioja Report.

Intense strawberry, blackberry and vanilla aromas immediately appeal and the creamy, smooth black fruit flavours that come from this complex, mature Crianza are stunning. It has good structure, with some firm tannins in the background which mean that it will last. However, If you want to enjoy a mature Rioja Crianza now, without cellaring it, this is an excellent choice. It is smooth, velvety and savoury with excellent length.

This wine comes from a family-owned, Single Estate, situated in the northern area of Rioja Alta. Their 75 hectares of vineyards have been carefully nurtured by the family for four generations and they use organic fertilisers, indigenous yeasts and avoid the use of weedkillers and pesticides. The vines are grown mainly in the bush form and yields are kept low. The grapes for this wine come from 30 + year old vines and are hand-harvested and selected. It has spent 12 months in American oak barrels before extended period in bottle in the Bodega.

“Even the Crianzas at Bodegas Urbina are released late, with lots of barrel and bottle age. Showing the sweetness and lightness of touch that are the hallmarks of the bodega’s reds, this pure Tempranillo is spicy, savoury and very smooth with palate-caressing tannins and a balsamic flourish. Drink 2021 – 2026”  Tim Atkin MW: 2021 Special Report Rioja.

“Vineyards in Cuzcurrita supply the Tempranillo grapes for this delightfully traditional Crianza, which is still young by the standards of some the Urbina family’s reds. Elegant, refined and lightly balsamic with fine tannins, a kiss of oak and savoury red berry sweetness. 92 Points – 2011 vintage. Drink 2019-24” Tim Atkin MW: 2019 Special Report Rioja

“Classically structured, fully mature, silky, savoury Crianza with lifted acidity. Crying out for grilled lamb.”  Sarah Jane Evans MW

Food match: Roast meats, especially lamb. It will also be good with lighter meats and cheeses.
