Sumarroca Brut Reserva Cava is definitely a step up on everyday Cava. It has pear and toasty aromas with full and complex flavours. At the same time it is fresh and nicely balanced with just a hint of citrus on its smooth, long finish. We have always been impressed with the lightness and fine bubbles of Sumarroca Brut Reserva Cava.
Cava is made in the traditional method with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. It is aged for 24 months in the Bodega. This truly is elegant fizz at a great price and a million miles from mass produced Cava and dare we say it, mass produced Prosecco!
The 2013 vintage won a Silver Medal at Decanter World Wine Awards 2016 with an amazing 91 points; this was the first time that Bodegas Sumarroca entered their wine in the Decanter awards. This Reserva Cava is brilliantly consistent, year on year.
The Sumarroca family have grown grapes for generations and in 1982, Carlos Sumarroca a highly respected viticulturist, and his wife Nuria, bought the 15th century estate, establishing one of the few estate only grown Cava producers in Spain. They practice sustainable farming, harvesting at night and only use free-run juice in their cavas. Their winery is terraced along a hillside so that all movement of the wine is by gravity.
The estate is notable for having a poor land, which is good for vine growing. The influence of the sea is diminished by the effect of the Garraf mountains which dry the sea breezes and coastal mountain range that reduces excess dry wind coming from the interior. These conditions give the base for elegant wines with a fresh fruitiness that are well balanced. The grapes for this wine come from two different parts of the estate, the second part is located in the southern most part of the Penedès. The land is full of clay with the presence of silt. The maritime influence on this land is very high because it is located a few kilometers from the sea. This Mediterranean character ends up giving a more fruity wine base.
Food match: A great aperitif and will partner not too sweet desserts – cakes, creme caramel, fruit salads.
