Ashling Park Classic Cuvée comes from our closest wine estate in West Sussex, situated in West Ashling. It has finesse and personality with wonderful aromas of freshly baked brioche, stone fruits and red apples. With the recognisably Champagne like aromas, very fine bubbles and an impeccable balance of fruit and acidity, Ashling Park Classic Cuvée is a full-bodied and yet very fresh, elegant English Sparkling wine with excellent length. Talented winemaker Dermot Sugrue has definitely worked his magic with this terrific Sparkling wine.
During our visit to the Wine GB Tasting in September 2021, we were thrilled to hear that this brilliant Fizz won the Wine GB Trophy for Classic Cuvée for a second year running (2020 and 2021) adding to a Decanter Gold Medal in 2019. Having tasted our way through the line up of 40 Sparkling Wines, we were not surprised!
We have added this wine to our portfolio of English Sparkling Wines, because in contrast to our fizz made from predominantly Chardonnay grapes, this wine is made from 90% red grapes and is a little richer in style. It has spent some 6 years on its lees, providing great depth of flavour and lovely autolytic characteristics; it was disgorged in May 2018. The reviews of this wine really sum it up. This is an exceptional Sparkling Wine at a brilliant price – a real treat.
“Super rich, toasty and trophy-winning champagne-like fizz.” Fiona Beckett The Guardian 27 March 2021
“A perfect example of an English Classic Cuvée. Wonderfully stylish with aromas of freshly baked bread and ripe red apples. In the mouth the balance is perfect, with fresh mouth-watering acidity and delicious savoury spice. Incredibly well judged, it oozes class” Wine GB Panel 2020 – Trophy
“Focus and precision on the nose, full of personality and vigour. The mousse is persistent and the texture is light and poised. A decent dose of autolytic complexity on the finish” 95 points: Decanter Gold Medal 2019
“The wine is bursting with personality – managing to be both creamy and saline, and toasty as a croissant smeared with lemon curd. I’d put this up against the leading Champagne brands any day.” Oz Clarke MBE: writing in The Square Mile 2020, describing five of his favourite English wines.
“Very clean with a rich texture and lovely lemon meringue notes. Dry and fresh with a lovely juicy mid-palate.” Susie Atkins, TV presenter & wine expert
“Taste-wise, this is a really racy, energetic wine, with the expected citrus tang and orchard fruit. It’s superbly wholesome and precise, but seasoned with just the right amount of spiced pastry and biscuit to add structure and texture. At this quality level, Ashling Park is clearly as estate to watch.” John Mobbs www.greatbritishwine.com 18 October 2020
“Toasted almonds. Massive drive and intensity with a tightrope balance between richness, power and scalpel-point acidity. This is a very exciting wine. The fizz is super-fine but it is the polished-chalk acidity that carries it. Vertical depth of fruit with a river pebble minerality that lingers on the long finish. Very good value. 17.5 points” Tamlyn Currin – Jancis Robinson MW, Purple Pages: April 2020.
