Tasting Notes

Almaraz Tempranillo from Bodegas del Medievo in Rioja, was one of our most popular new wines over the last couple of years. An appealing, soft and very lightly oaked Rioja. It has berry fruit aromas coupled with a touch of vanilla oak and a juicy berry fruit, spicy palate.

Made from 90% young tempranillo grapes from the 2019 vintages and 10% of Tempranillo grapes from Medievo Crianza 2017 vintage, the latter have spent 12 months in oak barrels. This combination in Almaraz Tempranillo gives us the best of both worlds! A wine that is fresh, but has a touch of elegance and appeal of a more developed wine.

Established in 2001, Bodegas del Medievo is an exciting, innovative winery in Aldeanueva de Ebro 50km South of Logrono, just in Rioja Oriental. The Rioja Oriental has more of a mediterranean climate, as compared with Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, but as the vineyards of Bodegas Medievo are situated at 600 metres the climate is favourable for a range of grapes from Tempranillo to Graciano, as well as Garnacha which is widely grown in Rioja Baja.

The vineyards are situated on the fringes of Mount Yerga, 600 metres above sea level which provides optimal conditions for the cultivation of healthy grapes. Joseba and Santiago, viticulturist and winemaker respectively set up this Bodega to produced high quality wines that offer great value. The vineyards have been family run for generations. From their young wines like Almaraz through to Tuerce Botas Graciano Crianza, their wines have the hallmark of quality throughout. Their impressive maturing cellar of 1000 square metres, has 2500 American and French oak barrels.

We are pleased to see that the new 2019 vintage has been awarded a Gold Medal in Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge in 2020.
