a’Beckett’s Cuvée Victor Brut is a light, sparkling brut made from Seyval Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Auxerrois. Light apple fruit with hints of brioche aromas introduce a dry and refreshing English Fizz that has something a bit different than the conventional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier blend. It has good fruit balance, fine bubbles and a nice dry finish with good length. a’Beckett’s Cuvée Victor Brut is named after Paul Langham’s carpenter father-in-law, who helped build the wine storage facility and despite being tee total, is a regular member of the picking team!.
It has been made in traditional bottle fermented method and aged on its lees for 38 months before disgorgement, and has produced a developed, light and stylish Sparkling Wine which gained a Bronze medal at the UK Vineyard Association National Wine Competition in 2018.
Paul and Lynn Langham were amongst the early group of vine growers, and proudly proclaim themselves as Wiltshire’s largest vineyard. At 4 hectares (11 acres) this is tiny even by English standards! However, the geology here is excellent, greensand over chalk, similar to that of Ridgeview and Nyetimber, and Paul says that their location, further inland than most English vineyards provides less variation in weather. Paul and Lynn established the vineyard in 2001, on a site that had been (and still is) a successful orchard. It is a well drained site and aspect, which benetits from being sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds, making a good location for growing vines. The vineyard is in Littleton Panell, just North of Salisbury Plain.
For a relatively small size they grow a good variety of grapes with Pinot Noir, (making up more than 50%), Chardonnay, Auxerrois, Reichensteiner and Seyval Blanc; all their wines have vegan status. Around 70% of Paul’s wines are still wines with his Seyval Blanc dominating this Sparkling White, Cuvée Victor.
