We are thrilled with our new arrivals from family producers in Rioja and New Zealand and we are sure you will like them too!

Abel Mendoza Jarrarte Blanco 2021 DOCa Rioja

While most people naturally focus on the wonderful red wines from Rioja, it is a mistake to overlook the delicious white wines that can be found there.

We are delighted to find this un-wooded, impressive and highly accomplished textured white Rioja from Abel Mendoza. As soon as you take in its intense, layered aromas you know immediately that you are about to taste a special wine, unfortunately we only have a few bottles left of this vintage, but we wanted to let you know about it as we are confident the next vintage will be just as good.

Jarrarte Blanco 2021 is a complex wine with flavours of peach, pear and some tropical hints plus fennel and minerals in the background. This is beautifully pure, fresh and very long. An intriguing blend of indigenous grapes, mainly Viura and Malvasia but, unusually, 10% of the grapes are Torrontes, Tempranillo Blanco and Garnacha Blanca, all hand-picked from old vines.

Abel Mendoza Jarrarte Blanco 2021 stunning white Rioja. Complex, fresh, intense flavours of white peach, pear, tropical nuances and fennel. Impressively long, beautifully balanced. Pure and minerally. This is a must-try stunning white wine from top Rioja producer.

Able Mendoza and his wife Maite have 20 hectares of individual vineyard parcels scattered in and around San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It is one of the smallest estates in Rioja, located high up on the border of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa.

Abel comes from a typical Rioja wine family of two generations who grew grapes to sell on to other wine producers for mainly bulk wines. In 1988, at aged 19, Abel decided to make and bottle his own wines and just 6 years later, in 1994, he chose to produce only high quality wines. His family were very sceptical about this move, but with the help of his wife Maite Fernandez an oenologist, they built their reputation.

Abel Mendoza and Maite, are recognised as a top Rioja producer and they were identified in Tim Atkin MW Rioja Report as “Winemakers of the Year” in 2015. (Other notable winners include Jorge Muga and Telmo Rodriguez)

More than anything in the world, Abel cares for his vineyards, each plot tended to enable an authentic expression of the location, and harvested entirely by hand. Minimum intervention, sustainability and improving the vineyards for the future are at the heart of his philosophy.

We are sorry to break the news that we only have a few bottles left of Jarrarte Blanco 2021 and we now await the 2022 vintage which is not likely to arrive this side of Christmas. However, we do have another brilliant white Rioja in our portfolio, the very lightly oaked Luis Cañas Rioja Blanca 2020

Wairau River Estate Wines – Marlborough, New Zealand

From one family producer to another – this time the other side of the world in Rapaura in Marlborough, close to the Wairau River. We have been fans of Phil and Chris Rose’s family wines and we are pleased to introduce their Estate Sauvignon and Pinot Noir to our portfolio.

Phil Rose – founder of Wairau River Estate

Phil and Chris Rose were pioneers of New Zealand winemaking in the late 1970s, when they planted the vineyards near the banks of the beautiful Wairau River. (Wairau is Maori for ‘many waters’). Originally they grew grapes for other producers, notably Cloudy Bay. In 1991 they decided to produce their own wine and started more extensive planting, building a winery in 2002.

Today, they are joined by 5 children and extended family, making this one of the foremost 100% family owned vineyards, with some of the most mature vineyards, in Marlborough. The land bordering Wairau River is at the foot of the Richmond Range of hills; it enjoys long warm days and cold nights providing favourable conditions for growing quality grapes. Their wines are elegant and subtle.

Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is refined and elegant; lovely kiwi expression of Sauvignon which is subtle but intense at the same time. Stone fruit flavours with grapefruit hints, minerals, expressive palate and very long. 95 points Sam Kim Wine Orbit.

Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc is a classy, full, yet restrained New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that is elegant and approachable, with intense grapefruit aromas with light tropical fruit hints. It has expressive flavours of stone fruits, grapefruit with tropical hints mid palate. A crisp, yet smooth Sauvignon Blanc, offering good value for money.

Wairau River Pinot Noir 2020

Wairau River Pinot Noir 2020 is an elegant, beautifully balanced Marlborough Pinot Noir, from the Rose Family Estate. Lovely cherry, raspberry fruit aromas with a generous, silky palate. This is quality Pinot Noir at a brilliant price.

Wairau River Pinot Noir hits the spot for quality Pinot Noir at a competitive price. With aromas of raspberry and cherry fruit and hints of pepper and spice, leading into a palate of red fruits and plums framed by subtle elegant tannins. The result is a dry, light to medium-bodied Pinot Noir with good length, balance, structure and finesse.
