At our Summer Tasting it was white wines – from latest arrival Vinho Verde from Portugal to dry, stylish whites from Spain and a stunning West Sussex White – that were top sellers at our Summer Tasting.
In addition our organic and biodynamic Rosado (along with its sister Viognier) from Domino de Punctum was a real hit, and we were also pleasantly surprised at how popular our West Sussex Fizz was too. You can find out a little about each of our “Top Sellers” below.
We hold just a few of these informal, drop-in Tasting afternoons a year, to join us you need to be a subscriber to our Newsletter to hear about it early as spaces are limited, and booking is essential. Tastings are held near Emsworth PO10; you can subscribe at the bottom of the page!
Our latest arrival, Quintas do Homem, a delightful Vinho Verde from Portugal, took the top selling spot at our Summer Tasting. Abundantly fresh, light and crisp with superb full flavours of nectarines, citrus and a touch of melon. At only 11.5% it is a wonderful summer white at £9.25.
Most people have heard about Albariño, the star of Galicia (NW corner of Spain), but not the lovely Godello grape which comes from a little further inland. Merayo Godello is a brilliant example of this grape and received recognition from Jancis Robinson MW and James Suckling (a US wine critic). They scored this wine at 16.5/20 (a high mark for Jancis) and 91/100 respectively.
Jancis wrote “Very pure nose with good acidity and very promising structure…impressively long. VGV at £12.99” Our Tasters were impressed with its subtle nectarine, greengage, white peach flavours, freshness and harmonious balance Merayo Godello 2021 is fantastic value at Bush Vines at £11.35.
Our Tasters continue to love the organic and biodynamic wines from Dominio de Punctum; not only do they represent fantastic value as well as quality, but Dominio de Punctum Rosado this year knocks the spots off Provence Rosé now selling at silly prices! Dominio de Punctum Viognier 2021 has recently been reviewed by James Suckling and awarded 90 Points. Check out this pair of lovely wines at £8.85 a bottle.
Another award-winning white attracted a lot of interest and has steadily become one of our best selling white wines. Care Garnacha Blanca Nativa 2021 is a deliciously different dry white, with full flavours of white peach and tropical fruits mingled with hints of orange zest, citrus and nice minerality. It has a mouth-filling, smooth aftertaste and yet is fresh at the same time. Gold Medal winner at Grenache du Monde 2022 international competition. £10.50.
Finally a brilliant pair of wines from Albourne Estate in West Sussex. There is something special about good English wines. Our marginal climate, even in hotter years, means a long growing season and the grapes ripen slowly developing nuanced flavours. The quality of the fruit, combined with good wine-making skills can produce enigmatic white wines like Albourne Estate Selection 2019, which is elegantly textured, restrained yet full of crisp flavours.
In Matthew Jukes words “this wine is a masterclass in assembling a thoughtful blend from delicate components in a sensitive and beautifully balanced manner….harmonious, complex with summer orchard fruit, gentle florals and nice citrus touches…and given the value for money, one of the most stimulating whites of the year.” £14.95 (RRP £16.95)
Our fastest selling English Fizz this year is Albourne Estate Multi-Vintage Brut from Alison Nightingale’s lovely vineyards in West Sussex. With aromas of brioche, apricots and nuts, it is generous, soft and elegant on the palate. It has great length and a sustained mousse of fine bubbles. Made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, it is Champagne in all but name! Brilliant value at £21.50 (RRP £26.95)
