Table 2 of 3 – White Wines on Taste

This was a busy Tasting at full capacity as it was our Christmas Tasting! We selected 9 whites (including an English Fizz) to show a wide range of styles from Spain, South Africa, New Zealand and England. Here we have concentrated on our 6 top selling white wines.

First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc 2020 was a clear top seller. This fresh, crisp, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa’s most southern vineyard regularly receives accolades with a Decanter Silver Medal and 4.5 stars in Platters Guide this year. There are tropical fruit hints and impressive texture and length: perfect match with nibbles, shellfish, tomato based veggie dishes. Its stunning at £10.99.

Our Tasters found it difficult to choose between our Sauvignon Blancs on taste! Both hit the spot.

Zephyr Sauvignon Blanc 2020 (organic) A single vineyard wine from Ben Glover’s family vineyards in Marlborough, New Zealand

Zephyr Sauvignon Blanc 2020 (organic) a restrained and enigmatic Sauvignon from Marlborough, NZ is very much in the Pouilly Fumé flinty style. It has complex aromas of crisp apples, white peach and gentle gooseberry leading into full, layered flavours of Galia melon, white peach and gooseberry fruit. Superb texture and fantastic length. It was rated as Outstanding in Decanter, with 95 points and will be drinking well to 2025 but it is delicious now! £12.99

Care (pronounced Karey) Garnacha Blanca Nativa stunning label : really interesting wine too

Care Garnacha Nativa Blanc 2020 from Bodegas Añadas in DO Cariñena, (Spain) offers a complete contrast in style. It is made from Garnacha Blanca, which produces a fresh, but rounded dry white with greengage and orange peel aromas and full flavours of tropical fruit mingled with orange zest and nice minerality. A hugely versatile, textured white; perfect match with Fish, Poultry, Quiche and creamy cheeses. 90 Points: Highly Recommended by Decanter £10.25

Old Bush Vines in Luis Cañas Vineyards in Rioja Alavesa

Luis Cañas Viñas Viejas 2019 is a stunning white Rioja was also a clear top seller. The vines used in the production of this wine are 60+ years old, with low yields but wonderful concentration. Aromas of citrus fruits, hazelnuts and hints of flowers with a light oak touch, lead into pear, quince and citrus fruit flavours.  It has excellent balance and superb length. A seamless, structured and elegant white Rioja. It is a brilliant partner with Smoked Salmon and all seafood, poultry, pork and veggie dishes. 91 points Tim Atkin MW. £12.25  Special Winter Offer at £11.25…snap up a bargain, while stocks last!

Luis Cañas Viñas Viejas 2019

De Wetshof Bon Vallon Chardonnay 2021 surprised tasters who usually dismiss this lovely grape! From a top family producer in Robertson, South Africa, this is unoaked and derives its excellent flavours and textured from extended lees time of around 5 months. Peach and pear flavours mingle with light butter notes and zingy mineral flavours, providing a clean, long finish. It will be perfect with Chicken, Salmon, Fish Pie, Crab & Caesar Salad. Another wine with 91 points from Tim Atkin MW!  £11.25

Albourne Estate Bacchus 2019 – Decanter Silver Medal winner from West Sussex

Albourne Estate Bacchus 2019 West Sussex. A lot of Tasters were taken by the subtle aromas of elderflower and herbs which lead into complex and layered flavours of elderflower, asparagus, citrus and tropical hints. This is a refreshing, classy dry white with a lovely smooth mouth-feel, and for 11.5% abv it is really full-flavoured, with an elegant, long finish. A wonderful aperitif, but also good with fish, shellfish and goats cheese. A consistent Decanter Silver Medal winner year on year. £14.99
